AI coding tools have created the largest productivity surge in software engineering history. They have also created something else: a quality collapse that is worse than the throughput gains in almost every downstream metric that matters.
That is the core finding of the Faros AI 2026 Engineering Report, titled “The Acceleration Whiplash.” It analyzed two years of telemetry from 22,000 developers across more than 4,000 teams — tracking what changed when teams moved from low AI adoption to high AI adoption inside the same organizations. Today’s AIEWF Coding Agents keynote (Day 2) and tomorrow’s “Verifiers Are King” session (Day 3, Tariq Shaukat/Sonar) are both, in effect, reactions to the same dataset.
Here is what the data shows and what builders should do about it.
The Numbers That Should Concern You
Faros compared identical organizations at low versus high AI adoption periods and tracked changes across task systems, IDE activity, version control, static analysis, CI/CD, incident tools, and HR metadata. The productivity story is real:
- Epics completed per developer: +66%
- Task throughput per developer: +33.7%
- PR merge rate per developer: +16.2%
The quality story is also real, and it runs in the opposite direction:
- Incidents per pull request: +242.7% — nearly three times as many production incidents per merged PR
- Bugs per developer: +54%
- PR review time: +441.5% — reviewers are taking 4.4x longer on each review, and still not catching what’s failing
- Code churn (lines deleted vs. lines added): +861% — nearly 10x as much code being removed relative to what is being added, meaning a large fraction of AI-generated code is getting ripped out shortly after it merges
- PRs merged without any review (human or agentic): +31.3%
The last number explains the others. Reviewers cannot keep pace with the volume of AI-generated code. When the merge queue outpaces the review queue, code reaches production unseen. The incidents follow.
Faros named this the “acceleration whiplash” because the mechanism is structural, not a team failure: AI has flooded a system built around human-paced development and human-quality code with output the system was never designed to absorb.
The AI PR Share Is Growing Faster Than Anyone Expected
Greptile, which presented at AIEWF this week from a dataset of 700,000+ PRs per month across enterprise customers, found that 27.6% of all merged pull requests were AI-generated as of April 2026. In February 2025, that number was under 1%.
That trajectory — from under 1% to 27.6% in fourteen months — is the external confirmation of what Faros found internally: the system parameters changed faster than the process infrastructure did. Every review gate, CI/CD pipeline, and quality checklist in your organization was calibrated for a pre-2025 world.
The Sonar data that frames tomorrow’s AIEWF Day 3 keynote shows the human side of the same gap: 96% of developers do not trust AI code in production without verification. 48% always verify before committing. But 42% of committed code is already AI-generated. Those numbers do not reconcile — which means a non-trivial share of AI code is shipping without the verification that most developers say they want to apply.
Why Strong CI/CD Alone Did Not Protect Teams
The natural response to “more bugs are reaching production” is “improve the CI/CD pipeline.” Faros found that strong CI/CD practices did not insulate teams from the whiplash effect. The reason is scale: CI/CD was built for human-paced throughput. When PR volume doubles or triples, pipelines that were already near capacity get overwhelmed, flaky tests get ignored because there are too many of them, and review bots that flag issues get deprioritized because the signal-to-noise ratio degrades.
The problem is not that CI/CD is broken. The problem is that CI/CD was sized for a world that no longer exists.
Addy Osmani, who is presenting on agentic code review at AIEWF this week, has documented a related finding from the agent PR research literature: a January 2026 study of 33,707 agent-authored PRs found that predictable signals (file types, patch size, diff entropy) identify high-maintenance PRs before any human looks. Teams that triage up front using cheap signals fast-track the easy ones and concentrate review capacity on the risky ones. The same study found reviewer abandonment — a reviewer starting but not finishing a PR review — accounted for 38% of rejected agent PRs.
The Anthropic internal code review pilot moved internal PR review completion rates from 16% to 54% by adding an AI review layer before the PR ever reached a human. The AI layer handled first-pass triage; humans reviewed the flagged subset at higher quality and higher completion rates.
The Runtime Verification Consensus
The industry response forming at AIEWF and in the tooling ecosystem is runtime verification: agents that run their own code in a controlled environment before the PR is even opened, validating results against real behavior rather than static analysis.
Greptile, Cursor, and Devin have independently arrived at the same architectural conclusion. Static verification — reading the diff, running unit tests against mocks — is not sufficient for catching bugs that live between services in cloud-native architectures. Runtime verification lets the agent execute generated code in a sandbox, observe the actual outputs, and catch integration failures before they become production incidents.
The critical nuance, from the New Stack’s analysis of the three tools: what the agent runs its code against matters as much as whether it runs at all. Sandbox mocks may miss exactly the bugs that will fail in production. Teams deploying runtime verification need to think carefully about environment fidelity, not just whether verification exists.
What to Do: Four Infrastructure Changes
The data from Faros, Greptile, and Sonar points to four specific changes that address the whiplash mechanism, rather than the symptoms.
1. Correlate AI adoption telemetry with incident data from day one. Faros found that the acceleration/quality divergence is only visible when both datasets — AI adoption metrics and incident/observability data — are present and correlated. Teams that track only productivity metrics get a systematically optimistic picture. Add incident rate per PR as a primary metric alongside throughput; it is the leading indicator of whether your AI adoption is compounding or eroding.
2. Enforce branch protection rules that require at least one review before merge. The 31.3% increase in unreviewed merges is the single most addressable cause in the Faros data. Requiring at least one review — even an agentic review — before merge is a low-cost structural fix that addresses the root cause of unreviewed code reaching production. Make unreviewed merges impossible rather than discouraged.
3. Triage agent PRs before human review, using cheap signals. Apply a lightweight circuit-breaker step at PR open time: file types changed, patch size, diff entropy, dependency modifications. Fast-track PRs that score low; route high-risk PRs to human review with context. The 33,707-PR study shows this is achievable with cheap signals before any human looks at the diff.
4. Size your review infrastructure for the new throughput, not the old one. If your team is now generating 50% more PRs than it was in 2024, your review infrastructure needs to handle 50% more review volume before you ship more agents. CI/CD, code review tooling, and on-call rotations should all be re-baselined against current throughput. Most teams have not done this recalibration.
The Bigger Picture
The Faros report frames the acceleration whiplash as a systemic problem: AI has changed the input rate without changing the absorption capacity of the downstream system. Incidents, bugs, and churn are not quality failures by individual developers — they are queue overflow at every process step that was sized for a lower-throughput world.
The AIEWF session titles this week are not accidental. “Coding Agents” (Day 2, today) is the capability story. “Verifiers Are King” (Day 3, tomorrow) is the infrastructure response. Both are necessary because the capability story runs ahead of what the infrastructure can absorb.
The builders who will be well-positioned six months from now are not the ones who shipped the most AI code — they are the ones who built the absorption capacity to handle the quality overhead that comes with it.
