Status as of June 19, 2026: Fable 5 and Mythos 5 remain suspended under US export controls. The free plan access window closes June 22 regardless of whether models return. This article covers the billing mechanics for builders who plan to use Fable 5 when access is restored.
For the suspension timeline and refund deadline, see the Day 7 status update.
What the Free Window Was
When Anthropic launched Fable 5 on June 9, it included the model at no extra cost on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans through June 22, 2026 — a two-week onboarding window before the model moved to usage credits. The intent was to give existing subscribers hands-on time before the billing clock started.
The US government suspended both models on June 12. Three days in.
Most builders on subscription plans got three days of free Fable 5 access — not two weeks. The June 22 sunset date was not extended to compensate for the suspension days. If access returns before June 22, the remaining window is roughly two days. After that, credits are required.
What Changes on June 23
Starting June 23, continued Fable 5 use on any plan tier requires usage credits — prepaid funds that activate after you exhaust your included plan limits.
The mechanism:
- You hit your normal plan limit (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise hourly/daily ceiling)
- You get a notification that you have reached your limit
- If credits are enabled and funded, usage continues, drawing from your credit balance
- Your standard plan limits still reset on their normal cadence; credits cover only the overflow
Credits do not replace your plan — they extend it.
The Rate
| Model | Input | Cached Reads | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fable 5 | $10 / 1M tokens | $1 / 1M tokens (90% discount) | $50 / 1M tokens |
| Opus 4.8 | ~$5 / 1M tokens | — | ~$25 / 1M tokens |
Fable 5 at API rates is double the cost of Opus 4.8 — Anthropic’s most capable model before this launch. The prompt-caching discount is significant: cached input reads at $1/M vs. $10/M uncached. Builders with repetitive system prompts or large reference context should architect around caching aggressively.
For Claude Code users: terminal sessions, Research mode, and project file content all consume credits once you are past your plan ceiling. Chat messages count the same way.
Setting Up Credits
Credits are not automatically enabled. You have to opt in:
- Go to Settings → Usage in your Claude account
- Enable usage credits
- Click Add funds and prepay an amount in dollars
- Optionally configure auto-reload: funds top up automatically when your balance drops below a set threshold
There is a daily redemption limit of $2,000. If you are building production systems that could hit Fable 5 heavily, plan credit balance accordingly.
What Builders Should Do Today
If you plan to use Fable 5 post-suspension: Enable credits in your account before June 23. You will not lose access on June 22 due to billing — but if Fable 5 returns and you hit your plan limit, having credits ready means no interruption.
If you are undecided about Fable 5 vs. Opus 4.8: The rate difference is real: Fable 5 is twice the cost per token at uncached rates. For most production workloads, the question is whether Fable 5’s capability improvement over Opus 4.8 justifies 2× the spend. That evaluation was cut short by the suspension — most builders only had three days of access before June 12. Until access is restored and you can run your own benchmark on representative tasks, the evaluation window is not open yet.
If you want to minimize cost exposure: Wait until Fable 5 is restored, run your evaluation using the remaining free plan window (if any), then decide whether to fund credits based on observed output quality on your actual workload. Do not pre-fund large credit balances before you have validated the model on your use case.
If you filed for the June 20 refund: No action needed on billing — you have already opted out of the current cycle. Credits setup is relevant only after you decide to re-subscribe when access returns.
The Pricing Restructure Question
If Fable 5 does not return before June 22, the credits structure may change as part of any deal terms. Anthropic could extend the free window, restructure the credits model, or offer a new onboarding period as a goodwill move to subscribers who lost access for 10+ days. None of this has been announced. The current rate structure is what is documented as of June 19.
