Sol is OpenAI’s strongest model to date. Terra is positioned as the daily-driver replacement for GPT-5.5 at a meaningfully lower cost. Luna targets the high-volume, cost-sensitive pipeline tier.

OpenAI published TerminalBench 2.1 scores alongside the launch. This benchmark tests long-horizon terminal-based agentic tasks — the kind of work that coding agents and autonomous pipelines actually do.

A few things worth noting before reading too much into these numbers:

Sol vs. Mythos 5 is 0.8 points. That is well within evaluation noise for most real workloads. OpenAI’s Sol is slightly ahead on this benchmark; whether that holds on your specific task is an empirical question. Both models are currently government-restricted, which makes the comparison mostly academic for now.

Terra and Fable 5 are tied at 84.3%. This is the pairing that matters most for builders who are not in the frontier-restricted tier. Terra costs $2.50/$15 per million tokens; Claude Fable 5 API pricing has been available to enterprise customers. When Terra reaches GA, you have two roughly equivalent options and can evaluate on task fit and ecosystem rather than raw performance.

Luna at 82.5% beats GPT-5.5. The cheapest tier in the GPT-5.6 family outperforms the previous generation’s flagship on this benchmark. That is a meaningful signal for cost-sensitive pipelines: when Luna is available, running routine classification, extraction, or summarization tasks on Luna instead of GPT-5.5 means lower cost at higher (or equal) performance.

Terra is priced almost identically to Sonnet 4.6 — but benchmarks significantly above it (84.3% vs Sonnet’s older benchmark range). Luna is 25% more expensive than Haiku 4.5 on input but achieves 82.5% TerminalBench, which is well above Haiku’s tier.

If you are currently on GPT-5.5 for routine tasks, Terra will cost less at higher capability. If you are using Sonnet 4.6, Terra is the natural GA migration target for comparison.


Builder Actions

If you are in the ~20 approved companies: Run Terra and Luna evaluations immediately. Sol access is yours, but the Terra/Luna pricing tier is where most production economics will land.

If you are waiting for GA: Three things to do now:

  1. Build your evaluation suite. The week Terra hits GA, you want to be testing your actual workloads — not figuring out what to test. The TerminalBench scores give you baseline expectations; your domain may differ significantly.

  2. Audit your GPT-5.5 usage. Identify which calls are frontier-quality versus routine. Terra will likely replace GPT-5.5 for most tasks at lower cost; Luna will handle volume-sensitive pipelines. Know which bucket each of your use cases falls into.
