On June 11, 2026, xAI shipped the Grok Build Plugin Marketplace — a built-in catalog of installable extensions for the Grok Build terminal coding agent, indexed in the public xai-org/plugin-marketplace repo. You type /marketplace inside Grok Build, browse the catalog, and press i to install. No separate package manager. No leaving the terminal.

The mix is notable: these are not demo integrations. MongoDB and Vercel are foundational tools in the JS/TypeScript/Node ecosystem. Sentry says it is used by “millions of developers and 200K organizations … with 190B+ events processed daily”. Chrome DevTools access means Grok Build can control a running browser session — which opens a path to web scraping, E2E testing, and visual UI debugging without leaving the terminal.


What a Plugin Actually Is

A plugin is a directory that can bundle any combination of six component types:

An optional plugin.json manifest adds metadata and can override component paths. A single install can extend the agent in multiple ways at once — for example, the Sentry plugin bundles both an MCP server and slash commands for stack-trace analysis and production-issue triage.

The practical implication: if you have already built an MCP server, packaging it as a Grok Build plugin is straightforward. The plugin format is a thin wrapper around existing MCP infrastructure.


How to Use the Marketplace

Inside a running Grok Build session:

  1. Type /marketplace to open the plugin catalog browser
  2. Navigate with arrow keys, select a plugin, press i to install
  3. Grok Build fetches the plugin, verifies the SHA pin, and integrates it — no restart required

To update an installed plugin, return to /marketplace and select the plugin to see if a newer pinned version is available.


Security Model: SHA Pinning

Every plugin in the catalog must pin its source to a full 40-character lowercase commit SHA; Grok Build re-verifies git rev-parse HEAD == sha after cloning.

Without a SHA pin, a vendor force-push or repository compromise would silently ship new code to every user who installs or updates the plugin. The pin means the code you install today is exactly the code that was reviewed when the pin was set — nothing can change it without a new PR to the catalog.

What xAI does not do: xAI does not audit or verify third-party plugins for safety or correctness. The SHA pin prevents supply-chain substitution, but it does not prevent a vendor from publishing a plugin that does something unexpected. Treat third-party plugins the same way you would treat a pip install or npm install of a package from an unknown author — review the source before you install.

The catalog repo: xai-org/plugin-marketplace on GitHub. Public. The catalog file (.grok-plugin/marketplace.json) points at plugin source repos with their pinned SHAs. You can audit any plugin before installation by reading its source at the pinned commit.


Building and Submitting a Plugin

The marketplace is an open catalog. If you’ve built a plugin, submit a pull request to xai-org/plugin-marketplace.

Steps (per the repo’s contribution process):

  1. Build your plugin directory with any combination of the six component types
  2. Add a plugin.json manifest with your plugin name, version, category, and a pinned source SHA
  3. Fork xai-org/plugin-marketplace, add your plugin entry to .grok-plugin/marketplace.json, and open a PR
  4. CI validation and code-owner review are required before merge; your plugin appears in /marketplace for all users once merged

What makes a good plugin candidate: Tools your team already uses in daily development. If your workflow involves checking a service’s state, querying an API, or running a CLI before or after writing code, that workflow is a plugin waiting to be built.

MCP-first path: If you already maintain an MCP server, the simplest plugin is a thin plugin.json that wraps it. You do not need to rewrite your server — just reference it and pin the SHA.

The Plugin Marketplace is a Grok Build CLI feature. It is not available through the grok-build-0.1 API.

If you are using Grok Build through the API and want plugin functionality, you have two options: (1) replicate the plugin’s MCP server directly in your API calls using the native "type": "mcp" tool format, or (2) subscribe to SuperGrok for CLI access alongside your API work.


The Platform Angle

The Plugin Marketplace is xAI moving Grok Build from a product to a platform.

When Grok V9-Medium ships — training completed May 25, fine-tuning and RL underway, with Musk citing “2 to 3 weeks to public release” (roughly mid-June 2026) — it will inherit the plugin ecosystem. The 1.5T-parameter V9-Medium model, trained with added Cursor workflow data, plus a live plugin catalog for MongoDB, Vercel, Sentry, Cloudflare, and Chrome DevTools, is a materially different offering from an isolated coding model. The open-catalog model (PR-based submission, public repo, SHA-pinned) is directly analogous to how VS Code built its extension ecosystem: low friction for publishers, public audit trail, community-driven growth. xAI is betting that the developer community builds the integrations faster than xAI can.

The chrome DevTools plugin in particular warrants attention. Live browser control inside a terminal coding agent is not a productivity shortcut — it is a different class of capability that blurs the line between coding agent and computer-use agent.


What to Watch

  • Grok V9-Medium release: The plugin ecosystem becomes significantly more interesting when paired with a stronger base model. Musk’s own estimate was “2 to 3 weeks” from the May 25 training-completion announcement — i.e., roughly mid-June.
  • New plugin submissions: Watch xai-org/plugin-marketplace on GitHub for community plugins, especially infrastructure tools (PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS, GCP) that have not yet appeared as launch partners.
  • LSP integration depth: The LSP component type is mentioned in the plugin spec but none of the six launch plugins appear to use it yet. LSP integration would enable language-server-level code intelligence (go-to-definition, find-references, real-time diagnostics) directly inside Grok Build’s context — worth watching for a TypeScript or Python LSP plugin.
  • Third-party plugin security incidents: xAI does not audit plugins. The SHA-pinning model protects against silent updates but not against a plugin that misbehaves at install time. Security researchers are likely already reviewing the launch plugins.
