Most “best MCP servers” lists are SEO plays: 10-15 servers, one paragraph each, no testing. They tell you a server exists. They don’t tell you if it’s good.

Databases
The official database MCP servers are both archived — and both have security vulnerabilities.
The official PostgreSQL server (2.5/5) has a SQL injection vulnerability that bypasses its read-only transaction wrapper. Multi-statement injection (COMMIT; DROP SCHEMA public CASCADE;) works because the Node.js postgres client accepts semicolon-delimited statements. Stop using it.
The official SQLite server (2.5/5) also has a publicly disclosed SQL injection vulnerability (June 2025, Trend Micro). Unsanitized table names concatenated via f-strings enable stored prompt injection — an attacker plants a payload in a database field, and when an AI agent reads it, the payload hijacks the agent. Anthropic declined to patch it. Stop using it with real data.
For cloud Postgres: Neon MCP (4/5) is the standout for pure database work. 20 tools, OAuth authentication, and a branch-based migration workflow that makes schema changes safe by default. For full backend management, Supabase MCP (4/5) covers database, edge functions, storage, and debugging in one server — broader scope but weaker branching (schema-only, paid plans only).

Reasoning & thinking
Can an MCP server make your agent think better? The Sequential Thinking MCP server (3/5) is Anthropic’s official answer — a single tool that structures reasoning into numbered steps with branching and revision support. It’s the #10 most popular MCP server globally (~73K weekly npm downloads, though declining ~32% since December 2025), and the concept is sound: visible, auditable, step-by-step reasoning.
The problem is timing — and now Anthropic agrees. Anthropic updated their think tool blog post to explicitly recommend extended thinking “instead of a dedicated think tool in most cases.” Downloads have dropped accordingly: from ~402K/month in December 2025 to ~273K in February 2026. A memory leak in long sessions (PR #3321 — 10GB+ RAM after 6-8 hours) remains unpatched, though March 2026 brought type coercion fixes and tool annotations. Still maintained (not archived), but its creators are pointing users elsewhere.
Use Sequential Thinking if you need auditable reasoning traces, your MCP client doesn’t support extended thinking, or you’re debugging agent decision-making. Skip it if your model has built-in reasoning capabilities — Anthropic themselves now recommend that approach.

These categories each have a clear default choice:
Filesystem MCP (4/5) — Anthropic’s reference server. Read, write, search, and manage files within configurable directory boundaries. Does what it says, does it well. The allowed_directories config is a simple but effective safety mechanism.
GitHub MCP (4/5) — GitHub’s official server (27K stars). PR workflows, Actions integration, Projects management, issue management, code search, and now secret scanning. The January–March 2026 updates fixed the biggest pain point: OAuth scope filtering auto-hides tools your token can’t access. Consolidated Projects toolset cuts token usage by 50%. Six releases in two months show active investment. Setup friction is lower than before but still real (Docker, token scoping for fine-grained PATs).

Amplitude MCP expanded from analytics-only to Session Replays, Agent Analytics, Feature Flags, Web Vitals, plus in-client chart rendering (MCP App) and 27 open-source agent skills via mcp-marketplace (22 stars, MIT). Google Analytics MCP (2,000 stars, official, Apache 2.0) has 7 read-only tools with clean ADC auth. PostHog MCP (34.2K monorepo stars, MIT) has the broadest open-source tool set: 27+ tools with read-only mode and codegen-powered expansion. Pendo MCP (new official, Claude Connectors Directory) adds product analytics. Mixpanel MCP expanded beta to ChatGPT/Gemini with session replays. Cloud storage
Every major cloud provider has some MCP server coverage, but the gap between best and worst is enormous.
For Google Cloud Storage: googleapis/gcloud-mcp storage-mcp (v0.5.1, April 28) is the best-designed storage MCP server in the category. 21 tools split into safe and destructive (opt-in via --enable-destructive-tools). v0.5.1 moved delete_object to destructive — tightening the security model. Google also now offers a managed MCP endpoint at storage.googleapis.com (7 tools, zero setup). Official, Apache 2.0, TypeScript, 764 stars.
For MinIO / self-hosted: minio/mcp-server-aistor remains the most feature-rich storage MCP server — 28 tools including AI-powered ask_object and text_to_object. However, MinIO’s open-source repo (minio/minio) was archived April 25, 2026 — the community edition is dead, users redirected to commercial AIStor. The MCP server still works but is now tied to a commercial product.
For AWS S3: The surprise gap persists. AWS’s official server covers only S3 Tables (Apache Iceberg), not standard S3 objects. The best general-purpose option is txn2/mcp-s3 (Go, 9 tools, 134 commits, security-focused) with only 3 stars. AWS needs to ship a proper S3 MCP server.
For Azure Blob Storage: Azure MCP Server 2.0 went GA April 10 with remote deployment support, but storage tools are unchanged — can upload blobs but can’t download them, 46 days later. No SAS URL generation either.
For Cloudflare R2: Fully covered through the Cloudflare API MCP server at mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp — R2 operations via universal search+execute (3,700 stars).

A growing category as every SaaS vendor adds MCP support. The dominant pattern: first-party hosted servers with OAuth.
Notion MCP (3.5/5) — 18 tools for pages, databases, search, comments, and workspace info. The Notion-flavored Markdown optimization is genuinely useful for token efficiency. But the v2.0.0 breaking change (databases → data sources) and OAuth tokens that expire 3+ times per week create real friction. Two premium tools are paywalled behind Notion AI.
Linear MCP (4/5) — Linear’s official hosted server at mcp.linear.app. 23+ tools (consolidated) for issues, projects, initiatives, milestones, and documentation. The save_issue consolidation (Feb 2026) simplifies agent decision-making, and March 2026 added issue.branchName for coding tool integration plus support for 15+ coding tools. ~277K all-time PulseMCP visitors, ~12.9K weekly. Best-in-class tool design — flat parameter schemas and embedded enum values reduce agent errors significantly. High context cost (17.3k tokens) and remote-only deployment are the main trade-offs. SSE endpoint removal expected by April 2026.
Todoist MCP (4/5) — Doist’s official server with 37 tools (up from 28 in early March) and an SDK-first architecture — the same tools work in MCP, Vercel AI SDK, or custom pipelines. Supports MCP Apps (interactive UI widgets in chat) and all three transports (HTTP, SSE, stdio). v8.4.0 (March 19) added filter management, productivity stats, attachment viewing, and task rescheduling with recurrence preservation. Atlassian MCP (3.5/5) — The official Rovo MCP server connects to Jira, Confluence, and Compass via OAuth 2.1 at mcp.atlassian.com. Cloud-hosted, permission-aware, audit-logged, free with your subscription. But 57 open issues reveal reliability problems: search uses a deprecated API endpoint (#70), ADF conversion failures break write operations, and authentication sessions fail across multiple clients. The community alternative sooperset/mcp-atlassian (4,600 stars, 72 tools) has 10x the adoption and adds Server/Data Center support.
Obsidian MCP Servers (3.5/5) — Eight community servers, no official support. Three architectural approaches: Local REST API plugin integration (mcp-obsidian, 3,074 stars, stale), direct filesystem access (MCPVault, 927 stars, lowest friction), and native Obsidian plugin (aaronsb, 264 stars, v0.11.15, graph traversal + Dataview + Bases). MCPVault rebranded at Obsidian’s request, shipped v0.9.0 with symlink security boundaries. The native plugin approach has the highest ceiling but is beta-only. For most users, MCPVault (one-line install, token-optimized, active) or cyanheads/obsidian-mcp-server (413 stars, dual transport, auth, structured logging) are the practical choices.
Asana MCP (4/5) — The most tool-rich productivity MCP server with 44 tools across tasks, projects, goals, portfolios, and teams. Hosted at mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp with OAuth, Streamable HTTP transport, 20+ verified client integrations. V2 launched Feb 2026 replacing deprecated V1 (shutdown May 2026). The full Asana Work Graph accessible through MCP — goal tracking, portfolio management, and resource allocation that no other productivity MCP server offers.
Google Calendar MCP (4/5) — The leading community Google Calendar server (nspady, 1,100+ stars, 297 forks, TypeScript, MIT). 13 tools for events, bulk creation, scheduling, availability, and multi-account management with cross-calendar conflict detection. OAuth 2.0 with PKCE (v2.6.0), npm package (@cocal/google-calendar-mcp), Docker support. v2.5.0 added create-events bulk tool and per-field timezone support. ~191K all-time PulseMCP visitors (#182). Google Workspace gap closing: Google launched official Workspace MCP servers in Developer Preview (May 2026) covering Drive (7 tools), Gmail (10 tools), Calendar (8 tools), Chat (2 tools), and People API (3 tools). A new category — deployment platform MCP servers are emerging as first-party vendor integrations.
Vercel MCP (3.5/5) — Vercel’s official hosted server at mcp.vercel.com. 13 tools covering projects, deployments, build/runtime logs, domains, and documentation search. The runtime log querying tool is the standout — filtering by log level, status code, time range, and full-text search is genuinely faster through natural language than through the dashboard. OAuth with client allowlisting provides a stronger security model than most MCP servers.
The tool count is thin relative to Vercel’s full platform (no environment variables, no edge config, no KV/Blob storage, no analytics). Community alternatives like Quegenx/vercel-mcp-server offer 30+ tools with full admin control, but trade OAuth security for API token auth. The official server is the safer choice; the community servers are more capable.
Pairs well with GitHub MCP (4/5) — GitHub handles the code side (PRs, issues, CI), Vercel handles the deploy side (builds, logs, domains).
Design-to-code
A category where the community got there first — and got there better.
Framelink MCP (4/5) — the community Figma MCP server with 13,700 GitHub stars — 34x more than Figma’s official guide repo. The key architectural advantage: descriptive output produces more accurate code than prescriptive output. Component nesting is preserved (the official server flattens it), payloads are ~25% smaller, and it works with any Figma account — no Dev seat required, no 6-calls/month cap. 11,500+ weekly npm downloads, 17 releases, MIT license. The most adopted design-to-code MCP server by a wide margin.
Figma Dev Mode MCP (3.5/5) — Figma’s official hosted server at mcp.figma.com/mcp. 12+ tools with exclusive write capabilities: code-to-canvas capture (generate_figma_design), Code Connect component mappings, and new April 2026 additions: generate_diagram for architecture diagrams and ERDs with database relationship connectors, Mermaid.js rendering, and FigJam skills (generate-project-plan turns docs/codebases/conversations into visual boards). OAuth authentication, zero-install remote architecture.
The official server’s draw is the design-code-design loop — no community server can push code back into Figma as editable designs. Code Connect improves code generation accuracy over time by mapping Figma components to your codebase. But the free tier gives you 6 tool calls per month, prescriptive output can conflict with your codebase conventions, and nested components get flattened.
Recommendation: Start with Framelink for design-to-code translation. Add the official server only if you need code-to-canvas capture, Code Connect, or FigJam integration — and have a paid Figma plan.
Beyond Figma: The design MCP ecosystem now includes Penpot (official MCP, open-source), Adobe Creative Suite (community servers for Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere), TalkToFigma (6,300 stars, bidirectional Figma manipulation), and UI component libraries (21st-dev Magic, shadcn/ui, Magic UI).

Payments
A new category — and one where the first-party server is clearly the right choice.
Stripe MCP (4/5) — Stripe’s official server, part of the broader Agent Toolkit (1,400 GitHub stars). 25 tools covering customers, products, prices, invoices, subscriptions, refunds, payment links, and disputes. The standout feature is documentation search — the agent can query Stripe’s knowledge base directly, making it genuinely faster to build Stripe integrations through MCP than through the dashboard + docs workflow.
The security model is best-in-class: OAuth via the hosted server at mcp.stripe.com, restricted API keys with per-resource permissions for local deployment, and dashboard-managed session oversight. Three layers of access control — more granular than any other MCP server we’ve reviewed.
The limitation is coverage depth. Stripe has one of the largest APIs in the developer tools space, and the MCP server exposes roughly 10-15% of it. No Checkout Sessions, no Connect, no webhooks, no Terminal, no Tax. Most resources only support create and list — no updates. This makes it excellent for development workflows (prototyping, integration building, documentation lookup) but insufficient for daily payment operations.
Local deployment is TypeScript-only (npx). Community Python alternatives exist but are limited.

Email is arguably the most security-sensitive MCP category. Your inbox contains password resets, financial confirmations, medical records — giving an AI agent access requires careful thought.
Gmail MCP Servers (3.5/5) — The ecosystem has multiple tiers. Google’s own Workspace MCP endpoint at workspace-developer.goog/mcp offers first-party Gmail access with no third-party code handling credentials. taylorwilsdon/google_workspace_mcp (1,700+ stars) is the community standard — 12 Google services, 100+ tools, three-tier permissions (Core/Extended/Full) so you can start read-only. MarkusPfundstein/mcp-gsuite (477 stars) is a focused Gmail + Calendar alternative with narrower OAuth scope. For headless/server deployments, baryhuang/mcp-headless-gmail uses a decoupled credential model that works without a browser.
No official MCP reference server exists for Gmail. The main security concerns: most servers request gmail.modify scope (read + write + delete), OAuth tokens stored in local files, and send permission means a hallucinated email could cause real damage. Start with read-only access and escalate gradually.

Outlook MCP Servers (3.5/5) — The Microsoft 365 counterpart. Microsoft’s official Work IQ Mail server (Work IQ 772 stars) offers 10 tools with KQL search, hosted architecture, and enterprise-grade Entra ID auth — but requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license (~$30/user/month) and is in preview. Softeria/ms-365-mcp-server (665 stars, v0.91.0) is the community standard — 200+ tools covering email, calendar, OneDrive, Excel, OneNote, Tasks, Contacts, Groups, Webhooks, MIP sensitivity labels and more from a single npx install. 56 releases in 46 days, with webhook subscriptions and mail delta sync added in the latest week. ryaker/outlook-mcp (353 stars) uniquely adds Power Automate integration. pnp/cli-microsoft365-mcp-server (101 stars, doubled from 52) wraps the established CLI for M365.
The enterprise security infrastructure (Microsoft Entra ID, compliance policies, DLP rules) is more mature than Gmail’s, but the Copilot license paywall and preview status make the ecosystem less accessible. The April 27, 2026 Outlook.com outage (authentication key failures, 2-3 days) underscored the auth dependency risk for every server in this ecosystem.

CRM
CRM data — contacts, deals, pipeline stages, revenue forecasts — is some of the most commercially valuable information a business owns. The MCP ecosystem for CRM has matured rapidly, with four major platforms now offering official servers.
CRM MCP Servers (4/5) — Salesforce leads with salesforcecli/mcp (388 stars, Apache 2.0, official) — 60+ tools with dynamic toolset loading for metadata, SOQL, Apex, LWC, and DevOps Center. The hosted server forcedotcom/mcp-hosted (104 stars, GA) surged as enterprises embrace hosted MCP endpoints. Community alternatives: smn2gnt/MCP-Salesforce (176 stars, Python) and tsmztech/mcp-server-salesforce (155 stars).
HubSpot’s official Remote MCP Server is GA (April 13, 2026) with full read/write access to 12+ CRM object types via OAuth 2.1, plus a Developer MCP Server (GA) for app/CMS building. Community leader peakmojo/mcp-hubspot (121 stars) retains a niche for FAISS semantic search.
Zoho MCP covers CRM plus 13 other products with OAuth-based auth. New: Remote MCP Server for Analytics (centralized HTTPS deployment) and NPM packaging.
Microsoft’s Dataverse MCP Server (GA) provides 11 tools for Dynamics 365 data. The new Management MCP Server (GA April 2026) is a meta-layer — discover 1,470+ connectors and build custom MCP servers from them.
kesslerio/attio-mcp-server (67 stars, 1,341 commits) is surprisingly excellent for the smaller Attio CRM — 18 universal tools (consolidated from 70+), batch operations, and the most active maintenance by commit count. Pipedrive’s top server (WillDent, 56 stars) is read-only; Teapot-Agency offers full CRUD with 40 tools.

E-commerce
Shopify is the first major e-commerce platform to ship MCP servers — and they’ve shipped two.
Shopify MCP Servers (3.5/5) — A multi-server ecosystem with distinct layers. The Dev MCP (414 stars, @shopify/dev-mcp) is a zero-config developer assistant: docs search, GraphQL schema introspection, theme validation, and code validation against Shopify’s APIs. No API key needed. The Storefront MCP is a per-store endpoint for AI-powered shopping: semantic product search (vector embeddings), cart operations, policy Q&A, and interactive UI components — powering “Agentic Storefronts” across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot.
The critical gap: no official Admin API MCP server. For store management (products, orders, inventory, fulfillment), you need community servers like GeLi2001/shopify-mcp (139 stars, 31+ tools) or antoineschaller/shopify-mcp-server (22 tools). Adoption is growing but still community-driven. Shopify also co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with Google — an open standard for AI-agent-to-commerce-backend communication.

The fastest-growing MCP server category. Every major DevOps platform now ships an official MCP server, and AWS alone has 60+ specialized servers.
For cloud infrastructure (Cloudflare): Cloudflare MCP (4.5/5) — the most ambitious MCP server ecosystem we’ve reviewed. The main API server at mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp uses Code Mode to collapse 2,500+ API endpoints into just two tools (search() and execute()), consuming ~1,000 tokens instead of the 1.17 million a traditional approach would require. Plus 16 specialized product servers for Workers, DNS, observability, browser rendering, and more — all remote-first with OAuth. The V8 sandbox execution model is genuinely secure. If you’re on Cloudflare, this is the obvious choice.
For infrastructure as code: Terraform MCP (4/5) (HashiCorp, beta). 35+ tools giving agents real-time access to provider documentation, module specifications, and Sentinel policies from the Terraform Registry — plus HCP Terraform workspace management, variable sets, and Stacks. Helps agents write correct resource blocks instead of hallucinating arguments. Deliberately doesn’t run terraform apply — a smart safety choice. Dual transport (stdio + Streamable HTTP), tool filtering, rate limiting. Limited to Terraform ecosystem (no OpenTofu/Pulumi). Pulumi MCP (3.5/5) takes the opposite approach — 11+ tools including pulumi-cli-up for actual deployment, resource search across all cloud providers, and Neo agent delegation for autonomous multi-step infrastructure tasks. More ambitious but lower community adoption (66 stars vs. Terraform’s 1,300).
For containers: Docker MCP (3.5/5) — the most complete Docker management MCP server. 19 tools covering containers, images, networks, and volumes, with SSH remote support and a plan-and-apply docker_compose prompt. Security-conscious (blocks --privileged). Missing exec and Compose file support, but covers the full container lifecycle. For the broader Docker MCP ecosystem, Docker’s MCP Toolkit hosts 300+ verified server images with Dynamic MCP for mid-conversation tool discovery.
For Kubernetes: Kubernetes MCP (4/5) (Red Hat’s containers/kubernetes-mcp-server). Native Go binary that talks directly to the K8s API — no kubectl wrapper, no external dependencies. 6 modular toolsets (core, config, Helm, KubeVirt, Kiali, KCP), multi-cluster support, read-only and non-destructive modes, automatic secret redaction. 1,300 stars, 765 commits, 59 releases. For AWS: AWS MCP (4/5) suite (awslabs/mcp). 54 active servers (9 deprecated) covering compute, storage, databases, AI/ML, security, and cost analysis. The Knowledge server at knowledge-mcp.global.api.aws is a free managed endpoint indexing all AWS documentation. The managed AWS MCP preview combines API access + knowledge + Agent SOPs. 8,900 stars, 1,495 commits, active weekly releases. The deepest service-specific coverage but the most complex setup — start with the Knowledge server or managed preview.
For Google Cloud: Google Cloud MCP (4.5/5) — 50+ managed remote MCP servers (22+ GA, 10+ Preview) after Cloud Next ‘26 graduated the majority to GA. BigQuery, Spanner, AlloyDB, Cloud SQL, Firestore, Bigtable, Memorystore, GKE, Cloud Run, Compute Engine, full observability stack (Logging/Monitoring/Trace/Error Reporting), Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage — all GA. The pattern: official servers as starting points
After reviewing 97 MCP servers, a clear pattern has emerged:
Anthropic‘s reference implementations are starting points, not destinations. The official Filesystem and GitHub servers are solid (4/5 each). But the official database servers are both archived with SQL injection vulnerabilities (2.5/5 each), the official Memory server doesn’t scale (3.5/5), the official Fetch server has an SSRF gap (3.5/5), and the official EverArt server is minimal and archived (2.5/5).
First-party vendor servers are better. Sentry, Slack, Brave Search, GitHub — when the company that owns the product builds the MCP server, the integration is tighter, the maintenance is reliable, and the security model is sound.
The community fills the gaps. Community servers like Postgres MCP Pro, zcaceres/fetch-mcp, and jparkerweb/mcp-sqlite exist because the official implementations fell short. They’re often better than what they replace.

The actively maintained servers cluster at 4.0. The archived ones cluster at 2.5-3.0. Maintenance matters more than feature count.
How to choose: the starter stack
If you’re setting up an AI agent from scratch and want a solid default configuration:
- Filesystem MCP — file access (you almost certainly need this)
- Brave Search — web search (start with keyword, add Exa for research later)
- Playwright MCP — browser automation (if your agent needs to interact with web UIs)
- GitHub MCP — version control (if you’re building coding agents)
That’s four servers. Don’t install 15 servers on day one — each server adds tools to your agent’s context, and too many tools degrade decision-making. Start small, add as needed.

Instead of building custom integrations for each AI tool, developers can write one MCP server and have it work across Claude, Cursor, VS Code, and other MCP-compatible clients. Think of it like a USB driver for AI — a standard way to plug capabilities into any AI system.
How many MCP servers should I install?
Start with 3-4 that match your workflow. Each server adds tools to your agent’s context window, and too many tools degrade the agent’s decision-making. A good starter stack is Filesystem + Brave Search + GitHub + one domain-specific server. Add more only when you have a specific need.
Are MCP servers safe to use?
It depends on the server. Official servers from companies like GitHub, Stripe, and Cloudflare are generally well-maintained with proper authentication. Community servers vary widely — some have SQL injection vulnerabilities, hardcoded credentials, or overly broad file access. Always check the server’s GitHub issues, review its source code, and read our MCP Server Security Guide before installing anything.
What’s the difference between MCP and function calling?
Function calling is built into specific LLM APIs (like OpenAI‘s or Anthropic‘s) and requires you to define tools in each API call. MCP is a separate protocol that runs as a local or remote server, works across multiple AI clients, and can maintain state between calls. MCP servers can also expose resources (like database schemas) and prompts, not just tools.
Do MCP servers cost money?
Most MCP servers are free and open source. However, many connect to paid APIs — for example, the Stripe MCP server is free, but you need a Stripe account. Some servers like Browserbase or Neon connect to cloud services with free tiers. A few commercial MCP servers exist (hosted remote endpoints), but the majority of the ecosystem is MIT/Apache-2.0 licensed.
