At Google I/O 2026 (May 19), Sundar Pichai unveiled Gemini Spark — a persistent AI agent that runs on a dedicated cloud VM, 24 hours a day, whether or not your device is on.

You can email it. It can browse Chrome. It can make purchases, within limits you set. You can create sub-agents to handle specific domains. And it is powered by Gemini 3.5, running on Google’s new Antigravity platform.

A limited beta is rolling out to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States this week. This is not a demo. It is a product.


What Gemini Spark Actually Does

The headline is the persistence. Every major AI assistant that exists today — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot — is reactive. It waits for you to open the app, type a message, and ask a question. It does not do anything while you sleep.

Gemini Spark breaks that model. Your Spark instance runs on a dedicated cloud VM assigned to your account. It is always on. It is always available. And it can take action without you initiating the interaction.

Here is what it can do at launch:

Email integration: Each Spark instance gets a dedicated Gmail address (something like spark-yourname@gemini.google.com). You can email it tasks. Other people can email it with your permission. You can set up external services to trigger it via email. This is a surprisingly powerful interface — email is universal, asynchronous, and works from anywhere.

Autonomous web browsing: Spark can browse the web through Chrome without you present. You can set ongoing tasks — “monitor this job listing page and tell me when postings match my criteria” — and Spark will run them on whatever schedule you configure.

Payment authorization: Spark can make purchases on your behalf, up to a per-transaction and per-day limit you set. This is the capability that will generate the most concern (and the most press), but Google is being careful here: limits are hard-coded at the account level and cannot be changed by the agent itself. The initial beta is capped at $50 per transaction, $200 per day.

Sub-agent creation: You can spin up specialized sub-agents — a “travel Spark” that handles all itinerary research, a “shopping Spark” that tracks prices, a “news Spark” that briefs you each morning. These sub-agents are lightweight instances that report back to your primary Spark.


The Antigravity Platform

Google’s internal name for the infrastructure layer underneath Spark is Antigravity — a dedicated agentic compute platform built to run persistent, stateful AI workloads at consumer scale. This is not just Gemini 3.5 running on a standard cloud VM; Antigravity is optimized for low-latency, high-concurrency agentic tasks.

Google has not released technical details, but the implication is clear: this is infrastructure built to run hundreds of millions of persistent AI agents simultaneously. The engineering challenge is significant. Stateful agents that run continuously are fundamentally different from stateless inference calls.


How It Compares to OpenAI Operator

OpenAI launched Operator in early 2025 — an agent that could browse the web and fill out forms. It was impressive but reactive: you had to be present to kick off a task, and it ran in a browser session tied to your active session.

Gemini Spark is more ambitious. The persistent cloud VM model means true asynchronous operation. You can assign a task on Monday night and find the results in your email Tuesday morning without having ever opened an app.

The email interface is also differentiated. Operator uses a chat interface; Spark treats email as a first-class input channel. Email is lower friction for delegation — you can forward something to Spark with a brief note and move on. For people who live in email, this is a genuinely different workflow.

The payments capability is also ahead of what Operator currently offers publicly.

The gap: Spark is tied to Google’s ecosystem. It works with Gmail, Google Calendar, Chrome, and Google Shopping natively. If you live outside that ecosystem — if you use Outlook, Firefox, or Apple Pay — the value proposition shrinks. OpenAI Operator is more browser-agnostic. Claude’s agentic capabilities are more API-extensible for developers. Spark wins on consumer integration within Google’s world; it is less compelling outside it.


Concerns Worth Taking Seriously

Security: A persistent agent with access to your email, browsing, and payment authorization is an extremely high-value attack target. Prompt injection — where a malicious website embeds hidden instructions designed to hijack an AI agent’s actions — is a real and growing threat. Google has said Spark includes “adversarial prompt detection,” but this is a hard problem and no one has fully solved it. Google itself warned in May 2026 that malicious websites are actively targeting AI agents via hidden prompts. Running a 24/7 agent that reads arbitrary web content is a meaningful attack surface.

Privacy: Spark necessarily logs everything it does. Google will have a detailed record of every task you delegated, every site it browsed, every purchase it made. For users already comfortable with Google’s data practices this is not new, but it is worth naming explicitly.

Reliability: What happens when Spark makes a mistake while you are asleep? With a reactive AI, you are present to correct errors in real time. With a persistent agent acting autonomously, a misunderstanding can compound before you notice. The payment limits are one safeguard; the beta period presumably exists in part to find the edge cases.


Who This Is For

The beta is limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers — the highest tier of Google One, which currently costs around $30/month in the US. If you are already at that tier and live heavily in Google’s ecosystem, Gemini Spark is worth trying immediately. The persistent, asynchronous model is genuinely novel, and the email-as-interface approach fits naturally into professional workflows.

For casual users: this is coming. The beta-to-GA trajectory for Google AI products in 2026 has been fast. Spark will likely be broadly available before the end of the year.

For enterprise users: watch this space. The sub-agent model, if extended with enterprise authentication and audit logging, would be a serious workflow automation product. Google has not announced enterprise features yet, but the infrastructure is clearly designed to support them.

Gemini Spark is the most significant consumer AI agent announcement of 2026 so far. The persistent, cloud-based model solves the core limitation of every other AI assistant: they stop when you stop.

The ecosystem lock-in is real, and the security concerns are real. But as a proof of concept for what AI assistance can look like when it operates continuously rather than reactively — this is the direction. The era of AI agents that only work when you are watching them is ending.
