On May 6, Anthropic shipped Dreaming, Outcomes, and Multiagent Orchestration for Claude Managed Agents. The pattern was clear: if you had been building agent memory systems, eval frameworks, or multi-agent topologies yourself, Anthropic now offered to manage all of that for you. Your infrastructure, absorbed into theirs.
On May 19 — at its Code with Claude London event — Anthropic shipped two more features: self-hosted sandboxes (public beta) and MCP tunnels (research preview). The directional logic is opposite.
Where the May 6 features pulled agent infrastructure toward Anthropic, the May 19 features push Claude’s agent execution toward the customer. Together, the two sets of features describe a hybrid architecture that did not exist two weeks ago.
What Each Feature Does
Self-Hosted Sandboxes
When Claude Managed Agents execute tools — running code, reading files, calling APIs — those executions normally happen inside Anthropic’s managed infrastructure. Self-hosted sandboxes move that execution to infrastructure you control.
You point the sandbox configuration at your preferred provider — Cloudflare Workers, Daytona, Modal, or Vercel are the initially supported options — and tool execution runs there. The agent loop itself (orchestration, context management, error recovery, memory) stays on Anthropic’s side. The compute and the data stay on yours.
The split matters. If you are operating under data residency requirements — healthcare, financial services, EU GDPR, regulated government contexts — tool execution on Anthropic’s infrastructure may be a blocker. If execution happens inside your own cloud account or your own VPC, that blocker goes away for many compliance frameworks.
The deliverable is not just security theater. You also get your existing network policies, audit logs, and security tooling applied automatically to everything that executes. The agent is doing work in an environment you already govern.
MCP Tunnels
MCP tunnels solve a different and more fundamental problem for enterprise builders: how to connect Claude agents to MCP servers that live inside your private network.
The standard MCP architecture assumes your MCP servers are publicly reachable or at least reachable from Anthropic’s infrastructure. For many enterprise use cases — internal databases, legacy APIs behind firewalls, compliance-sensitive systems — this is not possible. Exposing these systems to the public internet to make them accessible to an AI agent is often not an option, regardless of how much security you add around them.
MCP tunnels work by inverting the connection direction. You deploy a lightweight gateway inside your private network. That gateway makes a single outbound connection to Anthropic’s infrastructure — outbound traffic, which your firewall already permits. No inbound rules required. No public endpoints created. No new attack surface added to your internal systems.
From there, when a Claude Managed Agent needs to call an MCP server inside your network, the traffic routes through the tunnel: agent to Anthropic’s infrastructure, through the encrypted tunnel, to your gateway, to your internal MCP server, back out the same way. End-to-end encryption throughout. Your internal systems never need to be exposed.
The configuration surface is small. You run one component: the gateway. Anthropic manages everything else.
The Architecture That Emerges
The May 6 and May 19 features, taken together, describe a specific model for how enterprise AI agents work inside Anthropic’s platform:
Anthropic manages:
- The agent loop (orchestration, context, memory consolidation via Dreaming)
- Evaluation and quality control (Outcomes)
- Multi-agent coordination (Orchestration)
- The MCP tunnel routing infrastructure
You manage:
- Tool execution compute (self-hosted sandboxes)
- Network access to internal systems (MCP tunnel gateway)
- Data residency and compliance
- Your existing security perimeter
This is a meaningful architectural position. Anthropic is not trying to be your cloud. They are managing the AI-specific complexity — the hard parts of running a capable, reliable agent loop — while leaving the compute, network, and data-governance layers under your control.
For enterprise buyers, this is a more credible conversation than “give us access to everything.” It maps reasonably well to how large organizations actually think about security architecture: separate the intelligence layer from the data layer, enforce controls at the boundary, maintain visibility through existing tooling.
What Changed for MCP Builders
If you are building on MCP — whether building MCP servers, building agents that consume them, or advising clients on MCP-based architectures — the tunnel capability changes the enterprise viability picture in a specific way.
Before MCP tunnels, pitching MCP-based agent access to internal enterprise systems required either:
- Convincing the organization to expose internal MCP servers publicly (rarely acceptable), or
- Running the entire agent stack inside the customer’s environment (operationally complex, loses the benefits of managed infrastructure)
With MCP tunnels, there is a third option: keep the agent loop managed by Anthropic, deploy the tunnel gateway inside the customer’s perimeter, and route internal MCP access through the encrypted tunnel. The enterprise maintains its security posture. You get the managed agent infrastructure.
This is not universally applicable — MCP tunnels are in research preview, access requires a request, and the feature is still being defined. But the architectural principle it establishes matters regardless of how long the preview period lasts.
The Gaps Worth Naming
Research preview limitations. MCP tunnels require requesting access. The feature set, stability, and pricing are not finalized. Do not architect a production system around it until there is a generally available release with published SLAs.
Supported sandbox providers. The initial self-hosted sandbox integrations are Cloudflare Workers, Daytona, Modal, and Vercel. If you are running on AWS, Azure, or GCP natively — the typical enterprise situation — you will need to wait for additional integrations or use a supported provider as an intermediary layer.
Tunnel gateway deployment. Deploying the tunnel gateway inside a customer network is a new operational component. In enterprise environments, adding new components to production infrastructure, even small ones, has a change management process. Budget for that.
Split responsibility model. The architecture assumes a clean division between agent-loop infrastructure (Anthropic’s) and compute/network infrastructure (yours). In practice, debugging failures across that boundary will be harder than debugging failures entirely within your own infrastructure or entirely within Anthropic’s.
Connecting to the Platform Race
An earlier piece asked whether the May 6 features represent a lock-in decision for builders: migrating your agent infrastructure onto Anthropic’s managed stack is fast and valuable, and also difficult to reverse once your production agents depend on it.
The May 19 features complicate that frame in a useful way. The self-hosted sandbox and MCP tunnel architecture is specifically designed to let large enterprises adopt Claude Managed Agents without handing Anthropic control of their data and compute. If the concern about vendor lock-in was “what happens to my data and my systems,” these features directly address that concern.
What they do not address is dependency on the agent loop itself — the orchestration, memory, and evaluation layer that still runs on Anthropic’s infrastructure. That dependency is real and, for the time being, is the point. Anthropic is willing to let you control your data and your compute. The intelligence layer is not on offer for self-hosting.
Whether that trade is acceptable depends on your organization’s risk tolerance and your read on Anthropic’s long-term trajectory. For some enterprise contexts, keeping the compute and data perimeter controlled while using managed orchestration is a workable arrangement. For others, it is still not enough.
