On July 7, 2026, Microsoft made Sales Agent and Service Agent generally available inside Microsoft 365 Copilot and Dynamics 365. The announcement came from Deva Rajamohan, Corporate Vice President of Dynamics 365 Customer Experience, in a post on the Microsoft Dynamics 365 blog. Service Agent had reached GA on June 30 with 70+ MCP tools; the July 7 update added Sales Agent GA and expanded the service-side MCP catalog to 90+ tools by mid-July.
Part of our Builder’s Log.
What the Two Agents Do
Sales Agent brings CRM context into the tools sellers already use — Outlook, Teams, and Dynamics 365 — without requiring them to switch between applications. In practice:
- Real-time account and deal summaries surfaced inline while composing email in Outlook
- Opportunity context and recent activity visible inside Teams meetings
- Natural-language CRM capture: sellers describe what happened post-meeting; Sales Agent writes the Dynamics 365 record
- Objection and commitment logging without opening Dynamics 365
Service Agent operates across the full customer service workflow. It generates case summaries when a rep picks up a new case, surfaces next best actions, drafts customer-ready email responses, and updates records without leaving the conversational interface. As CMSWire noted, the design goal was to move from “answering and summarizing to taking action across the entire service workflow.”
The MCP Architecture
Both agents are grounded in live Dynamics 365 CRM data through a Model Context Protocol (MCP) foundation. The July 15 technical blog from Microsoft catalogs the 90+ service MCP tools across several categories:
| Tool Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Case management | Get, list, update, close, enrich, match, reassign, pick from queue, resolve-and-pick-next, create case from email |
| Customer data | Account/contact summaries, detail views, lookup search |
| Knowledge | Article search, natural-language answers, article drafting, category filtering |
| Communications | Email view/draft/send, AI drafting, template recommendations, tone adjustment, translation, signature management |
| Intelligence | Case summaries, timeline highlights, suggested actions, follow-up cadence, decision cards |
| Workspace | Workforce management, SLA/queue monitoring, activities, notes, file uploads, Word/Excel/PowerPoint creation |
Builders can extend this catalog through custom MCP tools and Copilot Studio agent integrations. The MCP layer lets builders add domain-specific actions — a custom “route escalation to Tier 3” tool, for example, or a webhook that fires when a decision card is dismissed — without rebuilding the base agent.
Work IQ is the underlying AI layer that routes between the MCP tools and the Dynamics 365 + Microsoft Graph data sources. It persists context across Dynamics 365, Outlook, Teams, and standalone Microsoft 365 Copilot sessions.
Cowork Integration
The July 7 GA also introduced Dynamics 365 plugins for Copilot Cowork, Microsoft’s background-agent collaboration layer. Two plugins shipped:
- Sales Cowork plugin — for sales teams coordinating complex, multi-stakeholder deals (cross-functional threads, deal rooms, shared context across marketing and legal)
- Service Cowork plugin — for service teams managing case escalations and handoffs (context persists across shifts, agents, and channels)
This places Microsoft’s CRM agents on the same substrate as Anthropic’s Claude Cowork — the multi-agent coordination layer that went to web and mobile on July 7. Both companies shipped agent-coordination layers for non-developer enterprise work on the same day.
Licensing Requirements
Neither agent ships as a flat add-on; both require a stack of existing Microsoft licenses:
- Dynamics 365 Customer Service (Enterprise or Premium) — for case data, workflows, and Dataverse access
- Microsoft 365 Copilot — for the full cross-app experience in Outlook, Teams, and standalone Copilot
- Premium MCP tools consume Copilot Credits
The June 30 GA post notes that provisioning goes through the Microsoft 365 admin center. Per-role, per-app-module, and per-queue granular access controls let organizations pilot with a subset of users before a full rollout.
No standalone pricing for Sales Agent or Service Agent was disclosed.
Early Adopters
Two organizations are quoted in Microsoft’s GA materials:
- Sandvik Coromant (industrial tooling) — piloting Sales Agent to reduce context-switching for sellers who manage global accounts across multiple regions
- Northern Trust (financial services) — DP Indetkar cited Service Agent’s “move from reactive search to proactive intelligence” as the key value: having the right context, dependencies, and handoffs already surfaced from one location
The Builder Angle
If you already run Dynamics 365 + Microsoft 365 Copilot, both agents activate through admin center provisioning. The 90+ MCP tools cover most standard service and sales workflows out of the box, with custom MCP tools available for anything outside that catalog.
If you are evaluating whether to build on this stack, the key dependency is the license bundle. Neither agent works without both a Dynamics 365 enterprise license and an M365 Copilot seat. That is a meaningful barrier for smaller teams — CX Today’s coverage notes that organizations without established Dynamics 365 footprints gain little from these agents without significant platform migration.
On the MCP extensibility: the catalog is the right approach. Microsoft has published the MCP tool structure, and Copilot Studio allows custom tool registration. Builders can introspect the existing tools, identify gaps for their workflow, and ship custom MCP tools that chain with the native catalog — without maintaining a full CRM agent from scratch.
The market metrics Microsoft cites: IDC data shows $3.70 in return per $1 invested in generative AI; Gartner research projects 2.6× higher commercial growth for organizations using AI-enabled next best actions, and predicts that 80% of common customer service issues will be resolved without human intervention by 2029, reducing service costs by 30%.
Whether those projections prove out depends heavily on data quality inside Dynamics 365 — the New Dynamic LLC analysis notes that the agents are only as useful as the CRM records they’re grounded in. Clean, consistent Dynamics 365 data is a prerequisite, not a nice-to-have.
