OpenAI has stacked six deprecations in a five-month window. Some are minor — a model alias swap. Others require full architectural rewrites. One has no announced replacement at all. The deadline pressure is real: Assistants API dies August 26, and if your product is built on it, that is less than ninety days from today.

June 27: GPT-4.5 Retires from ChatGPT
What it is: GPT-4.5 (originally launched February 2025) is being retired from the ChatGPT web and mobile interfaces. It remains available in the API through its dated snapshot gpt-4-5-2025-02-27 for now.
Who it affects: Users who explicitly selected GPT-4.5 in ChatGPT’s model picker. Not a developer API issue unless you are building workflows that depend on GPT-4.5 access through ChatGPT’s UI.
Migration path: Switch to GPT-5.2 or GPT-5.5 in the API. In the ChatGPT interface, the default model (GPT-5.5) handles what GPT-4.5 did. The API snapshot is not going away simultaneously, but OpenAI has not announced a long-term support date for the snapshot.
Action required: Low priority unless you have specific GPT-4.5 integrations. Check whether any internal tools force the model picker to GPT-4.5 explicitly.
July 2: Fine-Tuning Access for Inactive Organizations
What it is: Organizations that have had no fine-tuning activity in the past sixty days lose access to create new fine-tuning jobs starting July 2, 2026. Existing fine-tuned models continue to work — you just cannot create new ones without re-establishing activity.
Who it affects: Teams that created fine-tuned models historically and are not actively running new fine-tuning jobs. Also relevant for orgs that have fine-tuning access provisioned but have not used it recently.
Migration path: If you need to maintain access, run at least one fine-tuning job before July 2. If you are not actively using fine-tuning, this is likely irrelevant.
Action required: Audit whether your team needs active fine-tuning access. If yes, queue a training run before the cutoff.
July 23: computer-use-preview Shuts Down
What it is: OpenAI’s computer-use-preview model — the API model that lets AI agents take screenshots, move a cursor, and interact with desktop interfaces — shuts down July 23. This was released in early 2025 as a preview capability and was never promoted to GA.
Who it affects: Builders who built browser automation, desktop agent, or UI testing workflows using the computer-use-preview model endpoint.
The replacement: Two paths exist:

GPT-5.4 via Responses API — GPT-5.4 includes built-in computer use capability exposed through the Responses API
computertool. This is the direct API-level replacement. It uses the same screenshot-and-action loop but requires migrating from the preview model’s interface to the Responses API structure. -
Operator — OpenAI’s production CUA (Computer Using Agent) product, bundled with ChatGPT Pro. If your use case is web browsing automation rather than full desktop control, Operator is the production path. It is not a direct API — it is a subscription product with specific task surfaces.
There is an open community thread asking whether computer-use-preview is retiring with no replacement. The answer is that the model is retiring, but computer use capability is continuing via GPT-5.4 and the Responses API — the confusion is that it requires migrating to a different API structure entirely.
Action required: If you use computer-use-preview, test GPT-5.4 computer use via the Responses API before July 23. The tool interface has changed. Do not wait.
August 26: Assistants API Shuts Down
This is the one that matters most for the widest pool of builders.
What it is: The Assistants API — OpenAI’s stateful agent framework launched November 2023 — is being fully removed on August 26, 2026. After that date, all requests to /v1/assistants, /v1/threads, /v1/messages, /v1/runs, and /v1/vector_stores will fail. This is not a soft deprecation. The endpoints stop responding.
OpenAI announced this on August 26, 2025 — one year in advance. That year is almost up.
Who it affects: Anyone who used the Assistants API to build:
- Chatbots with persistent memory across sessions
- AI assistants with file retrieval (Code Interpreter, file search)
- Multi-step agent loops using Runs
- Any application that references Thread IDs or Assistant IDs
The impact extends beyond direct API users. Zapier has already deprecated all ChatGPT steps that use the Assistants API; those Zaps stop working August 26.
The replacement: The official path is the Responses API + Conversations API. This is not a simple endpoint swap. The entire object model changed:

What this means in practice:
- State management that Assistants API handled automatically now needs to be managed through the Conversations API
- Tool call handling is restructured — function calls look different
- File retrieval uses a new file search structure
- Vector stores from the Assistants API do not automatically migrate

The upside: The Responses API is faster, supports newer features (MCP integration, computer use, deep research), and has a better cost model. Moving to it is an investment, not just a port.
Action required: Start migration now. Ninety days is not much time if you have a complex Assistants-based product. Inventory all Thread IDs and Assistant IDs your application generates. Plan for state migration — Threads do not export cleanly.
September 24: Videos API and All Sora 2 Models Shut Down
What it is: The entire Videos API and all Sora 2 model identifiers are removed September 24, 2026:

The Sora web and app experiences were already discontinued April 26, 2026. The API follows September 24.
Who it affects: Builders who integrated video generation into their products using OpenAI’s Sora API. This was a real API — companies built creative tools, marketing platforms, and content pipelines on it.
The replacement: There is no officially announced OpenAI replacement for the Videos API. OpenAI has not announced Sora 3 or any successor video generation API.
Builders need to evaluate third-party alternatives:
- Runway — Gen-3 Alpha and its successors; well-established API with active development
- Kling — Strong performance on motion quality; has an API
- Luma Dream Machine — Available via API; good for scene coherence
- Google Veo 2 — Available through Vertex AI if you are already in the Google ecosystem
None of these are drop-in replacements. Each has different API structure, rate limits, pricing, and generation characteristics. Budget time to evaluate against your specific use case before September 24.
Action required: If your product uses the Videos API, start evaluating alternatives immediately. This is the most complex migration because there is no clean successor from OpenAI.
October 23: Legacy Fine-Tuned Model Families Shut Down
What it is: Specific fine-tuned model families from older generations are fully shut down October 23. This is distinct from the July 2 fine-tuning access change — this is about models that were previously fine-tuned and deployed, not about the ability to create new ones.
Who it affects: Builders who trained custom models on older OpenAI base models (GPT-4o predecessors, fine-tuned GPT-3.5-turbo variants, earlier model series). If you have production inference calling a fine-tuned model ID from a legacy family, that endpoint dies October 23.
Migration path: Retrain on a supported model family. OpenAI’s current fine-tuning supports GPT-5.2 mini and more recent base models. The re-training investment varies heavily by dataset size and the gap between your legacy base model and the current generation.
Action required: Audit which fine-tuned model IDs your production systems call. Cross-reference with OpenAI’s deprecation documentation at developers.openai.com/api/docs/deprecations to confirm whether your specific model IDs are in the affected families. Start retraining efforts now — model training, eval, and deployment take time.

What the Pattern Tells You
OpenAI is consolidating around the Responses API as its single agentic surface. The Assistants API was a stepping stone — useful in 2024, now being retired in favor of a more composable architecture that handles state, tools, and multi-step reasoning without the rigid Thread/Run model.
The Sora situation is different. Video generation was apparently not the business OpenAI wanted to be in at the API level. Whether a successor appears later in 2026 or 2027 is unknown. For now, builders with video in their product stacks need to treat this as a platform exit, not a migration.
The Responses API is genuinely better than the Assistants API — faster, more composable, integrated with MCP and computer use. If you are migrating under deadline pressure, that is frustrating. But the destination is worth reaching.
