Apple’s WWDC keynote is June 8 at 10am PT. The conference runs June 8–12. If you build on iOS, ship an AI product, or want access to two billion active Apple devices, three things announced or confirmed this week should be on your radar before the keynote drops.
What’s Confirmed Before the Keynote
These are not rumors. They are confirmed announcements, code found in developer betas, or official joint statements:
Siri runs on Google Gemini. Apple and Google published a joint statement in January 2026 confirming a multi-year deal. Apple pays roughly $1B per year for access to a custom 1.2 trillion parameter Gemini model. The model runs through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure — end-to-end encrypted, hardware-isolated, no data stored by Google after processing. Siri 2.0 in iOS 27 is a full chatbot with web search, image generation, coding assistance, file analysis, and multi-step execution. It is not a wrapper on the existing Siri. The old Siri is gone.
iOS 27 has an Extensions framework for third-party AI providers. Code found in iOS 27 test builds on May 5, 2026 — with Apple’s own description language — shows a framework that lets users route Apple Intelligence requests to Claude, Gemini (the standalone app, separate from the Siri backend), or ChatGPT. Extensions live in App Store apps. A provider adds Extensions support to their existing app; users pick one in Settings; the choice routes Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground requests to that model system-wide. The framework spans iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.
Core ML is being replaced by Core AI. Apple will announce Core AI at WWDC. It replaces Core ML, which has powered on-device ML since 2017. Core AI is built for LLMs and generative AI rather than traditional ML pipelines. It still runs locally on the Neural Engine, GPU, and CPU without a network connection. New capability: apps can connect to both on-device and cloud models, with the system choosing where to run tasks based on performance and privacy requirements.
The Three Builder Decisions
Decision 1: Should you build a Siri Extension?
The distribution math is the argument for: Extensions reach iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 on every Apple device that runs the OS — over two billion active devices. For AI providers, being listed as an Extensions-supported model is a distribution event comparable to shipping on Android.
The constraints matter. Providers add Extensions support to their existing App Store app. Users choose one model in Settings. The choice is global — it routes all Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground requests to that provider. This is not a per-query selection. Users are unlikely to switch providers frequently, which means the first-mover advantage for providers that ship quality Extensions is meaningful.
Apple has confirmed Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini (standalone) as the three providers that showed up in early test builds. The Extensions API will be opened to additional providers, but the initial three have positioning advantages: they are the examples Apple will demo at WWDC, and they get first slot in the user-facing Settings UI.
If you are an AI provider — not a builder using AI, but a company shipping an AI product — the Extensions framework is your most important iOS move of 2026. If you are a builder integrating an AI API, Extensions are irrelevant to your work directly. Your users will have their own Extension choices on their devices.
Builder decision: If your company ships an AI product (model, assistant, agent), prioritize shipping Extensions support before iOS 27 falls in September. If you integrate AI APIs into an app, wait and observe — Extensions add no new surface you control.
Decision 2: How does Core AI change your on-device work?
Core ML launched in 2017 as a framework for running traditional ML models on-device — image classifiers, NLP models, tabular prediction. By 2025 it had accumulated APIs for model conversion, quantization, on-device inference, and integration with Create ML. The problem is that these APIs were built around frozen models and batch inference — not LLMs, not streaming generation, not multi-turn conversation.
Core AI does not break Core ML compatibility. The existing CoreML.framework will continue to work. The change is a new, parallel framework designed from the start for generative inference. Key capabilities based on confirmed early reports:
- Local LLM inference on Neural Engine, GPU, and CPU, with the same privacy guarantees as Core ML
- Routing between on-device and cloud models at the framework level — apps describe a capability, Core AI chooses where to run it
- Support for multi-turn context across sessions (persistent agent memory, on-device)
- Integration with the Extensions framework — a user’s chosen Extension can be the cloud backend when on-device runs aren’t suitable
Builder decision: If you run on-device ML using CoreML.framework today, you do not need to migrate immediately. WWDC will ship the Core AI beta; evaluate migration in H2 2026 after the full API is documented. If you are starting a new iOS project with on-device AI today, hold until the WWDC beta — Core AI will be the right foundation for new work.
Decision 3: What does the Gemini-Siri architecture mean for enterprise builders?
The Apple-Google deal is not just a consumer story. The architecture has specific implications for enterprise iOS deployments:
Apple processes Gemini model queries through Private Cloud Compute. The stated guarantees: end-to-end encryption, hardware-isolated enclaves, no data stored by Google after processing, no Apple data used in Google model training. Apple controls the trust boundary; Google provides compute.
For enterprise builders, the question is not “does Apple trust Google with our data” — it is “does our organization’s security policy permit queries to a third-party cloud backend when routed through a first-party privacy architecture.” The answer will vary by industry. Healthcare and financial services organizations with strict data residency requirements will need to validate that Private Cloud Compute’s architecture satisfies their compliance reviewers before enabling Siri 2.0 features for employees.
The Extensions framework adds a second wrinkle: if employees choose Claude or ChatGPT as their Extension, queries go to those providers’ own API infrastructure, not through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s privacy wrapper only applies to the Siri-native backend. Enterprise MDM will need explicit policies for which Extensions are permitted on managed devices.
Builder decision: If you sell AI tools into enterprise iOS environments, start documenting Private Cloud Compute’s architecture now. Your security reviewers will ask about it in Q3. If you build enterprise MDM tools, plan for Extension allow-listing in the June developer beta.
What WWDC Will Add
The above is pre-keynote information. WWDC on June 8 will deliver:
- Full Core AI API documentation — the actual developer-facing interfaces, not just confirmed existence
- Extensions onboarding requirements — how non-launch providers qualify to ship Extensions support; App Store review guidelines for AI providers
- Xcode 18 beta — with Core AI tooling and Extensions testing support
- iPhone Fold APIs — if the foldable iPhone announcement materializes at WWDC, expect adaptive layout APIs for the new form factor
- Session content across June 8–12 — hundreds of sessions that will clarify migration paths, API behavior, and the practical details that pre-keynote reports cannot cover
The Platforms State of the Union on June 8 at 2pm PT (scheduled for after the keynote) is the session builders care about more than the keynote itself. The keynote is for consumers. The State of the Union is where Apple speaks to developers.
What to Watch For
Three signals during the keynote that will clarify the builder picture:
Extensions open enrollment: If Apple announces a public process for any AI provider to apply for Extensions certification (not just the named launch partners), the distribution opportunity is democratized. If it remains invite-only or requires revenue sharing, the addressable market for smaller AI providers is much narrower.
Core AI on-device model catalog: If Apple ships a catalog of pre-approved on-device models for Core AI (similar to how they handled MLX), the framework becomes a deployment vehicle for open-weight models. If Core AI only routes to Apple’s own on-device models or Extensions-designated providers, it is a more constrained runtime.
Enterprise Controls announcement: Apple has increasingly shipped enterprise-specific announcements at WWDC — declarative device management, advanced MDM controls, etc. Watch for an enterprise session that addresses Extensions governance and Private Cloud Compute audit capabilities.
