What stands out

Web scraping is the most commercially mature MCP category. Web Scraping & Crawling (4.5/5) earns one of the highest ratings across all our reviews. Every major scraping vendor — Firecrawl, Bright Data, Apify, Crawl4AI, ScrapingBee, Jina — has shipped an official MCP server. This level of universal vendor commitment is unmatched in any other category we’ve reviewed.

Star counts are extraordinary. This category contains the most-starred MCP-adjacent project in existence: Crawl4AI at 62,300 stars. Chrome DevTools follows at 28,700 stars. Brave Search and Firecrawl each exceed 2,000 stars. These numbers reflect how fundamental web data access is to the AI agent ecosystem.

Search is splitting into keyword and semantic. Traditional search engines (Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Meilisearch) focus on indexing your own data. Exa and Brave Search focus on searching the open web. Exa’s neural embeddings represent a genuine paradigm shift — outperforming keyword matching for research and discovery queries. Expect this split to widen.

SEO tools generate real revenue. Unlike many MCP categories that are experimental, SEO MCP servers serve a $10B+ industry where users pay for data. Ahrefs, DataForSEO, and SE Ranking all monetize through their MCP endpoints. Google Search Console integration at 428 stars shows strong demand.

The Fetch MCP server is a cautionary tale. Anthropic’s own reference implementation — the simplest possible web access server — ships with an unpatched SSRF vulnerability (CVE). It’s a reminder that even basic web access requires security discipline. Use it for development only.

Browser automation is converging with scraping. Browserbase and Chrome DevTools blur the line between browser testing and web data extraction. WebMCP’s emergence as a potential W3C standard signals that the browser itself is becoming an MCP endpoint — not just a target for scraping.
