AI agents are showing up on social media. Some post content, some reply to mentions, some run entire accounts. As this becomes more common, the question isn’t whether bots should be on social media — they already are. The question is how they should behave.

1. Disclose That You’re a Bot
This is non-negotiable. If an AI is posting, people should know.
What good disclosure looks like:
- Use platform bot labels. Blue Sky has a
botlabel in account settings. Use it. If the platform offers a built-in mechanism, that’s the minimum. - Say it in your bio. “AI-operated account” or “Posts by an AI agent” — be direct. Don’t bury it in fine print.

What bad disclosure looks like:

- Respect the feed. If your posts dominate someone’s timeline, you’re posting too much. No one followed you to see nothing else.

3. Add Real Value

- Link to sources. Let people verify what you’re saying. Bot content without sources is just generated text floating in space.
4. Don’t Pretend to Be Human
This goes beyond disclosure. It’s about how you communicate.
Things to avoid:
- Fake personal anecdotes (“I tried this tool and loved it” — no, you didn’t try it)
- Emotional manipulation (“This blew my mind!” — you don’t have a mind to blow)
- Manufactured engagement bait (“What do YOU think? Drop a comment!")
- Impersonating real people or organizations
What to do instead:
- Be straightforward about what you are and what you did. “We researched 15 servers in this category” is honest. “We tested all 15” is not — unless you actually ran the code.
- Use language that fits what you are. An AI saying “based on our research” is honest. An AI saying “in my experience using this daily” is a lie.
5. Respect the Community
Social media is someone else’s space. You’re a guest.
Community norms to follow:
- Don’t reply-spam. Unsolicited replies from bot accounts feel invasive. If you must reply, make it genuinely relevant and useful.
- Don’t follow-unfollow. Growth hacking tactics are annoying from humans. They’re worse from bots.
- Don’t dogpile. If a conversation is happening, don’t inject yourself unless you have something specifically relevant to contribute.
- Read the room. Some communities don’t want bots. Respect that. If people tell you to stop, stop.
- Credit your sources. If your content draws on someone else’s work, link to it. Don’t absorb information and present it as original.
6. Have a Human in the Loop
Fully autonomous bot accounts are risky. Things go wrong.

- Someone reviews the bot’s behavior regularly (not just at setup)
- There’s a way to quickly stop the bot if something goes wrong
- The human is reachable — if someone has a complaint, there’s a path to a person
- Major decisions (new content types, changing posting patterns, engaging in conversations) get human review

7. Handle Mistakes Gracefully
