Backup and disaster recovery MCP servers are giving AI assistants direct access to enterprise data protection infrastructure. Instead of navigating backup management consoles, these servers let AI agents monitor backup jobs, check SLA compliance, inspect storage utilization, manage Kubernetes backup schedules, and create file-level snapshots — all through the Model Context Protocol.
The landscape now spans six areas: enterprise backup platforms (Commvault and Veeam), Kubernetes backup (Velero), cloud storage and sync (rclone), database backup (Databasement), file-level backup (MCP-Backup-Server and autorestic-mcp), and cloud infrastructure (AWS API MCP server for backup services).
The headline findings: Both Commvault and Veeam now have official MCP servers — Veeam launched veeam-ai/veeam-mcp-server on March 31, 2026 with 16+ capability categories spanning VBR, Veeam ONE, and VSPC. Commvault’s server (11 stars) expanded with Salesforce backup tools and Metallic gateway routing. New entries fill previous gaps: rclone-mcp brings 98 auto-generated tools for cloud storage management, autorestic-mcp provides a read-only restic wrapper, and Databasement (311 stars) offers database backup with MCP integration. kubectl-mcp-server hit 875 stars as the go-to Kubernetes MCP server with Velero module. The remaining gaps are still significant: no Rubrik, no Cohesity (despite their $17B valuation), no Acronis, no Veritas, no Nakivo, no HYCU, no Druva, no Datto, and no BorgBackup or Kopia MCP servers. One of the first major enterprise backup vendors to ship an official MCP server. It uses the cvpysdk Python SDK to interact with Commvault’s REST APIs, giving AI agents deep access to backup infrastructure. 159 commits and active development through April 2026.
The tool set covers job management (view details, history, suspend, resume, resubmit, kill), SLA monitoring (compliance status, security posture scores), storage management (space utilization, pool configurations, storage policies), client administration (groups, properties, subclients, associations), plan configurations (backup schedules, retention policies), and commcell metrics (entity counts, infrastructure overview).
New since March 2026: Commvault added Salesforce MCP tools (opt-in via ENABLE_SALESFORCE_TOOLS=true) for browsing backed-up Salesforce records with filtering and pagination. Metallic gateway routing now routes Metallic requests through the gateway (April 22). Filter query support was added for more precise data retrieval (April 2). An Azure Application Gateway WAF compatibility fix resolves User-Agent blocking issues.

Launched March 31, 2026 — Veeam is now the second major enterprise backup vendor (after Commvault) to ship an official MCP server. This is a significant milestone for the category.
The server exposes 16+ capability categories across three Veeam products (VBR, Veeam ONE, and VSPC): threat/malware visibility, license intelligence, job operations, restore point and RPO coverage, repository health, proxy capacity, WAN acceleration, NAS protection, agent health, cloud and SaaS workloads, service provider operations, and more.
Key design choices: Docker-deployable, runs locally with full customer data sovereignty (no data leaves the environment), enables cross-correlation of Veeam data with ITSM, storage, cloud, security, and monitoring platforms. Requires Node.js 24+.
This effectively replaces the earlier VeeamHub community repo (VeeamHub/veeam-modelcontextprotocol), which has been removed (returns 404 as of April 2026).

AWS’s official MCP server mono-repo includes the AWS API MCP Server — a generic gateway that provides access to all AWS services, including AWS Backup, S3 lifecycle policies, cross-region replication, and disaster recovery services. It offers command validation, security controls, and natural language interaction with AWS infrastructure.
While not a dedicated backup server, this is how you’d interact with AWS Backup, S3 versioning, cross-region replication, and disaster recovery services through MCP today. AWS does not have a dedicated backup-specific MCP server.

The Bottom Line
Rating: 3.5 / 5 (up from 3.0) — The category has meaningfully improved since our initial review. Two of the top three enterprise backup vendors now have official MCP servers — Veeam’s March 31 launch with 16+ capability categories across VBR, Veeam ONE, and VSPC is a significant validation of MCP in enterprise data protection. Commvault continues active development with Salesforce integration and Metallic gateway support. New entries fill previous gaps: rclone-mcp for cloud storage, autorestic-mcp for restic visibility, and Databasement for database backup.
The remaining opportunity is still large: Rubrik and Cohesity MCP servers seem inevitable given both companies’ AI investments. A full restic MCP server (with backup creation, not just read-only inspection) would be immediately useful. And disaster recovery orchestration — automated failover, runbook execution, DR testing — remains completely unaddressed.
For now, Commvault and Veeam users are well-served with official options, Kubernetes teams have kubectl-mcp-server (875 stars), and the open-source backup ecosystem is starting to show signs of life.
