What Camunda Is

What ProcessOS Does

ProcessOS is described as the intelligence layer of the Camunda platform — not a standalone product, but an addition to the existing Camunda Hub. It uses four specialized AI agents that operate across the full process lifecycle.

Discover

The Discover agent maps how processes actually run in the enterprise today — not how they were documented, but how they operate in practice. It mines existing operational data, knowledge bases, and system logs to build a realistic picture of current-state workflows, including the informal paths and exceptions that never made it into the official process documentation.

The output is a structured understanding of the gap between designed process and actual process — the informal workarounds, the ad-hoc exceptions, the steps that were automated in one department but not another.

Design (Re-engineer)

The Design agent takes the discovered state and re-engineers it for an AI-first world. Improve

AWS Integration

ProcessOS runs natively on AWS, with deep integration into two Amazon services:

Amazon Bedrock provides the foundation model layer — the LLMs that power the four agents. Bedrock’s multi-model support means Camunda can route different agent tasks to different models based on capability and cost.

Amazon Bedrock AgentCore provides agent infrastructure: memory, identity, and gateway services. AgentCore handles the operational concerns — how agents persist context, how they authenticate with enterprise systems, how they route requests to internal tools — that would otherwise require custom infrastructure work.

The AWS-native positioning is a deliberate enterprise sales choice. Large enterprises that have standardized on AWS can extend their existing cloud contracts to cover ProcessOS rather than introducing a new vendor relationship for a new workload.


BPMN as a Governance Layer

The most distinctive aspect of ProcessOS compared to general-purpose AI agent platforms is the role of BPMN.

Most AI agent frameworks treat human approval as an optional feature — a callback or interrupt that can be added to a workflow. In Camunda’s model, human approvals and governance rules are structural constraints that the AI agents work within, not around. A process with a regulatory requirement for human sign-off on a specific step cannot have that step automated away by the Discover or Design agents. The BPMN model enforces it.

The “great re-engineering” framing is ambitious, but the underlying argument is sound: task-level AI automation is not the same as process-level redesign. ProcessOS attacks the latter. The AWS Bedrock integration is pragmatic enterprise positioning. The BPMN governance layer is the feature most distinctive from general-purpose AI agent platforms.

The main qualifications are also significant: closed beta status means there is no production track record, no public performance data, and no confirmed pricing. Camunda has real enterprise scale, but ProcessOS itself is unproven.

For enterprises already running Camunda at scale, this is an obvious path to watch. For organizations new to process orchestration, the learning investment is non-trivial regardless of AI capabilities.
