The PyPSA-powerio bridge is a significant addition — it lets users convert PyPSA models to the PowerIO format used by commercial simulators, enabling round-trips between open-source and proprietary tools within the same AI agent workflow. Stars jumped from 113 to 154 (+41) since April, with new contributor Samuel Talkington joining. Still the only MCP project attempting to unify the fragmented power systems software ecosystem.

The streamable HTTP addition is architecturally significant: it means EnergyPlus simulations can now run on dedicated servers and be accessed remotely by AI agents, rather than requiring local installation. For architecture firms and engineering consultancies, this enables shared EnergyPlus infrastructure.

  • Safety-interlocked approval gates — dangerous operations require explicit approval before execution, preventing accidental SCADA commands
  • Outage analysis — grid and facility outage root cause workflows
  • Maintenance scheduling — predictive and scheduled maintenance management

The safety-interlock design is the key differentiator for SCADA use cases. SCADA systems control physical infrastructure — motors, valves, circuit breakers. The approval gate pattern prevents AI agents from executing irreversible operations without human confirmation, which is the right architecture for critical infrastructure.

Note: The previously reviewed poly-mcp/IoT-Edge-MCP-Server (23 stars) has been deleted — the repository returns 404 as of June 2026. Users of that server should evaluate mcp-scada as a replacement.

The Read-Only Mode is significant for safety-conscious deployments — it provides a hard boundary preventing AI agents from accidentally controlling smart home devices while still enabling full read/monitoring access. HA container updated to v2026.6.1 via Renovate bot.

While not energy-specific, Home Assistant’s energy dashboard integration means ha-mcp can access solar production, battery state-of-charge, grid import/export, and consumption by circuit — the most widely used energy monitoring MCP in practice.

What’s Missing

The energy & utilities MCP landscape’s gaps are narrowing, but significant ones remain:

  • Real-time ISO/RTO market prices — the EIA server covers U.S. grid data with hourly resolution, but true real-time LMPs (Locational Marginal Prices) from CAISO, PJM, ERCOT, and MISO remain unserved
  • Utility billing and customer management — no MCP servers for utility CIS (Customer Information Systems), billing engines, or rate schedule management
  • DERMS — no Distributed Energy Resource Management System integration for coordinating solar, storage, and demand response at scale
  • Named EV charging networks — no ChargePoint, Tesla Supercharger, or Electrify America API integration; charge session management (start/stop) still missing
  • Weather-to-energy forecasting — no solar irradiance or wind speed to energy production prediction pipeline
  • Grid resilience — no vegetation management or asset health monitoring (zavora-ai/mcp-scada begins to address outage analysis)
  • Nuclear and hydroelectric — no simulation or monitoring tools for these generation types

The Bottom Line

Energy & utilities MCP servers continue their rapid maturation. The scientific simulation layer (PowerMCP v0.1.0 with 12 simulators, EnergyPlus MCP on v26.1.0, two US national labs) is now world-class. The smart home layer (ha-mcp at 3,329 stars, Victron solar/battery, HomeWizard P1 smart meter) is growing fastest. The grid market data layer has finally started filling in — EIA data for U.S. markets, ENTSO-E for Europe, Swiss national data.

The loss of IoT-Edge MCP is notable but offset: zavora-ai/mcp-scada launched days before this refresh with a more safety-conscious design appropriate for critical infrastructure.

The operational utility side (billing, DERMS, real-time ISO prices, EV network integration) remains the last significant frontier. The research and monitoring tools are mature; operational control tools — beyond what SCADA and smart home integrations cover — are still beginning to appear.

This category earns 4/5 — upgraded from 3.5 on the prior refresh. The combination of first formal PowerMCP releases, EnergyPlus cloud deployment capability, the ha-mcp explosion, and the arrival of grid market data tools (EIA, ENTSO-E) marks genuine maturation. The operational gaps are real but smaller than they were two months ago.
