FramePack — O(1) Long Video Generation on 6GB VRAM: ControlNet Creator’s Architecture That Changes What Consumer GPUs Can Do
In April 2025, Lvmin Zhang — the researcher known as lllyasviel, creator of ControlNet — published a paper and released code that addressed a deceptively simple problem: why does video diffusion get exponentially more expensive as videos get longer?
The standard answer was: because the transformer context grows linearly with the number of frames. Generating a 10-second clip requires 10× the attention computation of a 1-second clip. Generating a 60-second clip at 30fps requires attention over 1,800 frames — a memory and compute budget that pushes a professional H100 to its limits.
FramePack’s answer: compress past context based on temporal importance, so the transformer always operates over a fixed context window regardless of how many frames have been generated so far. Frame 1,800 costs the same to generate as frame 30. The result is a system where O(1) compute per frame holds for any video length — and where the minimum VRAM requirement for the underlying HunyuanVideo 13B model drops from 45GB to 6GB.
The second innovation is inverted anti-drifting sampling: instead of generating frames left-to-right (where errors accumulate over time), FramePack establishes the endpoint first and generates backward, so each new frame approaches a known anchor rather than extending an accumulating error chain.
Together, these two techniques enabled something the community hadn’t seen: 60-second and 120-second videos generated locally on gaming GPUs. The response was immediate — 16,800 GitHub stars within a year, viral coverage from Tom’s Hardware, and dozens of community integrations that made long-form video generation accessible to creators who couldn’t afford H100 clusters.
This review is written from public sources, official documentation, the FramePack paper (arXiv 2504.12626), benchmark comparisons, and community data. We do not test AI video tools hands-on.

Architecture: Three Problems, Three Solutions
Problem 1: Context Length Grows With Video Length
Standard video diffusion models encode every past frame into the attention context. Generating frame 100 means attending over frames 1-99. Generating frame 500 means attending over frames 1-499. This creates a quadratic blowup in attention cost and linear growth in KV-cache memory — neither of which is tractable on consumer hardware.
FramePack’s solution: Context compression via importance-weighted patchification.
FramePack compresses the input context using a progressive patchification scheme. Recent frames are represented at full resolution in the attention context. Frames further in the past are progressively “patchified” — merged into larger spatial patches that represent the same information with fewer tokens. Frames from long ago are represented extremely coarsely.
The key insight is that temporal redundancy increases with distance: what happened 200 frames ago changes slowly over time, and can be adequately summarized at low resolution. The recent history — the last 10-30 frames — contains the high-frequency information that matters for consistency.
The result: regardless of how many total frames have been generated, the transformer always sees a fixed-length context. The total token budget converges to an upper bound. Generating frame 1 and generating frame 1,800 have identical memory and compute requirements.
The paper calls this “Frame Context Packing” — hence the name FramePack.
Problem 2: Exposure Bias / Drifting in Long Sequences
Autoregressive video generation — generating frame N from frames 1 through N-1 — suffers from exposure bias: the model was trained on ground-truth frames as context, but at inference time it receives its own previously generated (imperfect) frames. Errors compound. After 30 frames, the accumulated error can produce noticeable artifacts. After 300 frames, it can produce visual incoherence.
This is the “drifting” problem that gave rise to the updated paper title.
FramePack’s solution: Inverted anti-drifting sampling.
Rather than generating forward (frame 1, then 2, then 3…), FramePack’s original I2V model generates backward from a known endpoint. In I2V mode, the input image is frame 0 (known) and the last frame of the sequence is generated first (as a “keyframe anchor”). Subsequent generation fills in the intermediate frames, each one approaching the already-established future anchor rather than extending the past.
This breaks the error accumulation chain. Each generated section has both a known start frame (the input image) and a known end frame (the previously established anchor). The model cannot drift unboundedly because it is always converging toward something it knows.
The paper’s ablation study shows the inverted sampling achieves the best performance on all drifting metrics and 4 of 7 overall metrics compared to forward sampling and other alternatives.
Problem 3: Training at Scale Is Prohibitively Expensive
Training video diffusion models is expensive because batches must contain entire video clips — and longer clips mean smaller batches, worse gradient estimates, and slower convergence.
FramePack’s fixed O(1) context means training batch sizes become comparable to image diffusion training: approximately 64 samples on an 8×A100 node. This is orders of magnitude more efficient than prior video diffusion training approaches. The paper frames this as making video diffusion “feel like image diffusion” in terms of training compute profile — which has downstream implications for fine-tuning, LoRA training, and community model development.
FramePack-F1: The Faster, Simpler Variant
On May 3, 2025 — two weeks after the original release — lllyasviel released FramePack-F1 (FramePack_F1_I2V_HY_20250503).
F1 is a “forward-only” variant: it does not use the inverted anti-drifting sampling of the original. Instead, it uses standard left-to-right generation. The tradeoff: somewhat weaker drift prevention on very long clips, but faster and simpler inference.
In practice, F1 became the dominant variant in the community for two reasons:
- Speed: Without the bidirectional framing overhead, F1 generates each section faster
- Integration compatibility: Several ComfyUI wrappers and 1-click installers found F1 easier to integrate
For most use cases under 30 seconds, the drift difference between the original and F1 is not perceptible. For 60-120 second clips, the original’s anti-drifting sampling produces more temporally consistent results on complex scenes.
FramePack-P1: The Upcoming Improvement
On June 26, 2025, lllyasviel previewed FramePack-P1, which introduces two further innovations:
- Planned Anti-Drifting (PAD): A more sophisticated approach than the inverted sampling of the original — models future trajectory explicitly during generation
- History Discretization (HD): A different approach to the context compression problem, treating past frames as discrete historical summaries
P1 results previewed on the FramePack GitHub page show improved visual consistency on long sequences compared to both the original and F1. However, as of May 2026, P1 has not been fully released. Community GitHub issues (#738, #768) have asked about the release timeline without resolution. This is consistent with lllyasviel’s development pace on ControlNet — slow, high-quality releases with long gaps between major versions.
Base Model: HunyuanVideo 13B
FramePack is not a standalone model. It is an architectural technique applied on top of HunyuanVideo (Tencent’s 13B parameter open-source video diffusion model). The FramePack checkpoints (FramePackI2V_HY, FramePack_F1_I2V_HY) are HunyuanVideo weights fine-tuned with FramePack’s context packing and sampling approach.
This has several implications:

- Full Attention across all spatial and temporal dimensions — no Mixed Attention artifacts
- 3D Causal VAE with strong temporal consistency
- MLLM-based bidirectional text encoder for strong semantic understanding
- The full HunyuanVideo training corpus and model quality
Limitations inherited from HunyuanVideo:
- Resolution capped at HunyuanVideo’s training distribution — in FramePack’s implementation, this is sub-640×640 (typically 512×512 or similar); not HD
- No native audio generation
- Primarily Chinese/English language prompts

The 6GB VRAM claim is real and significant. Prior to FramePack, running HunyuanVideo quality video generation required 45-80GB VRAM — i.e., multiple H100 or A100 GPUs. FramePack’s context compression reduces this to 6GB, which means:
- RTX 3060 laptop (6GB VRAM): functional, 4-8× slower than RTX 4090
- RTX 3080 (10GB VRAM): comfortable
- RTX 4090 (24GB VRAM): production-quality throughput at ~1.5s/frame with optimization
TeaCache optimization: A community optimization (enable_safety_checker in some wrappers, TeaCache flag in others) enables caching of attention computations between adjacent frames, reducing per-frame time on an RTX 4090 from ~3-4s to ~1.5s. Tradeoff: minor artifacts on fine details, particularly fingers and complex textures at high motion regions.
Use Cases: What FramePack Is Best For
FramePack occupies a specific niche in the video generation landscape:
FramePack excels at:
- Long video generation on consumer hardware — 30-120 second clips that no other model can produce at 6GB VRAM
- Cinematic camera movements — push-in, pull-back, orbital rotation, tilt, reveal sequences; the inverted sampling produces more stable camera motion than many alternatives
- Image-to-video with high input fidelity — the anchor-based sampling maintains strong visual consistency with the reference frame
- Local, private generation — no API key required, no content filters, full creative control
- Creative experimentation — low iteration cost on 6GB laptop GPUs makes FramePack accessible for testing prompts before committing to expensive API generation
Where FramePack falls short vs. alternatives:
- Human subjects and talking avatars: Community comparisons show Wan2.1 (Alibaba) delivers “markedly superior quality” for facial animation, lip sync, and realistic body movement
- Resolution: Sub-640×640 is not suitable for final production output where HD is required
- Text-to-video: FramePack is primarily I2V; T2V support exists but is a secondary use case and weaker in practice

Apache 2.0 permits commercial use, modification, distribution, and sublicensing with no territorial restrictions. No PRC jurisdiction clause. No MAU thresholds. No geographic exclusions.
This is a notable contrast to the video models it most closely competes with locally:
- HunyuanVideo: custom license excluding EU, UK, and South Korea
- CogVideoX-5B: custom license with PRC jurisdiction clause and 1M monthly visit cap
FramePack’s Apache 2.0 licensing makes it the cleanest option for commercial use cases in any jurisdiction. EU and UK developers who cannot legally use HunyuanVideo weights can use FramePack’s FramePackI2V_HY weights.
The Apache 2.0 license also covers the underlying FramePack checkpoints — these are FramePack’s own fine-tuned versions of HunyuanVideo. Note that if building on top of FramePack, the full legal picture involves confirming the original HunyuanVideo training data provenance (which Tencent has not disclosed).
MCP Server Support
No official FramePack MCP server exists as of May 2026. No significant community MCP implementation was found.
FramePack’s programmatic access paths (fal.ai, Replicate, WaveSpeedAI REST APIs) could theoretically be wrapped in a custom MCP server, but no documented implementation exists. FramePack’s primary use case is local deployment, which does not benefit from MCP server integration in the same way as cloud API tools.

FramePack’s 6GB minimum VRAM is genuinely unique. No other model of comparable quality runs at that threshold. For creators who own a 6GB or 8GB GPU — the most common consumer tier — FramePack is often the only viable local option.
The duration advantage is equally significant. HunyuanVideo-1.5 at 14GB VRAM generates 10 seconds. Wan2.1 at 24GB generates comparable lengths. FramePack at 6GB can generate 120 seconds — a 12× duration advantage over the next-best local option at a fraction of the VRAM requirement. This is not a marginal improvement; it is a qualitatively different category of output.
The quality gap relative to Wan2.1 for human subjects is real. For scenes that do not prominently feature human characters — landscapes, architecture, abstract motion, product visualization, nature — FramePack’s quality is competitive with Wan2.1 at a fraction of the VRAM requirement.
Verdict
FramePack is a research contribution from a credible source that produced practical, immediate results. Lvmin Zhang’s track record with ControlNet (a technique that transformed image diffusion usability) lends credibility to the FramePack approach — this is not a novelty release, it is a systematic solution to a real scaling problem in video diffusion.
The core claims hold up: O(1) compute per frame, 6GB VRAM minimum, 120-second generation. These are not benchmarking tricks or cherry-picked demos. The community has validated them extensively across dozens of hardware configurations.
The limitations are real but mostly inherent to the base model: sub-640×640 resolution, human motion quality below Wan2.1, no audio. FramePack adds duration and accessibility; it does not solve problems the underlying HunyuanVideo model has.
The P1 delay is the most meaningful outstanding risk. The previewed P1 improvements (Planned Anti-Drifting, History Discretization) could materially improve motion consistency on long clips. But P1 has been previewed for nearly a year without release. If lllyasviel follows the ControlNet development pattern, P1 will eventually arrive with significant improvements — but the community should not depend on a timeline.
Apache 2.0 licensing across the board is unusual and valuable in the open-source video generation space, where HunyuanVideo excludes three major developer markets and CogVideoX’s 5B series carries PRC jurisdiction terms. FramePack offers genuinely clean commercial use with no territorial carve-outs.
For the specific use case of long-form local video generation on consumer hardware, FramePack remains the best available option as of May 2026. For short-form quality-first generation on adequate hardware, Wan2.1 or HunyuanVideo-1.5 are stronger alternatives.
