There is a moment in most enterprise software companies’ histories where the market validates not just the product but the thesis behind it. For Synthesia, that moment was not a viral product demo or a celebrity use case — it was a case study from Heineken.

Heineken used Synthesia to train 70,000 employees worldwide in multiple languages, from a single source script, without a camera crew, without studio time, without localization teams rebuilding content market by market. The video was generated in as many languages as the workforce required. The avatar delivered the message in each. The training was consistent across geographies in a way that filmed content rarely is — and it was produced at a fraction of the cost.

The Heineken case study is not exceptional. It is representative. That is the point.

The pattern holds across industries, company sizes, and use cases: organizations that previously needed studios, on-camera presenters, voice actors, translators, and post-production workflows discovered that they could replace much of that stack with a SaaS product that costs less per year than a single day of traditional video production.

By October 2025, Synthesia had crossed $100M ARR, raised $200M in a Series E led by Google Ventures with Nvidia’s NVentures participating, and achieved a $4 billion valuation. The company had 50,000+ customers and counted 90%+ of Fortune 100 companies and 70% of FTSE 100 companies among them. It had also, at some point before accepting Adobe’s £10M strategic investment, rejected an acquisition offer from Adobe reported at $3 billion — choosing to remain independent at a moment when its own trajectory suggested the $4B valuation it would achieve months later was not ceiling but floor.

This review covers what Synthesia actually is, how the technology works, what its enterprise governance apparatus looks like, how it compares to HeyGen and Colossyan, and what its real limitations are. It is written from public sources, research, and available documentation. We do not test AI video tools hands-on.

Matthias Niessner is a professor at TU Munich and one of the foremost academic researchers in neural face synthesis and video manipulation. His research into deep learning-based video rendering predates the generative AI boom by years. His presence on the founding team means Synthesia was built on research depth rather than assembled from fine-tuned foundation models — a distinction that has compounded over time.

Lourdes Agapito is a professor of computer vision at University College London. Her specialization in 3D reconstruction and computer vision from video is directly applicable to avatar creation and motion capture from minimal input.

The figures suggest that Synthesia’s product solves a genuine enterprise pain point — specifically the cost and friction of producing multilingual training and communications video at organizational scale — and that it does so at a quality level enterprises are willing to deploy at.

The G2 rating of 4.7/5 with 1,799 five-star reviews is also notable for being from a platform that weighted heavily toward verified business users. The reviews are consistent on a specific point: the platform is easier to use than alternatives that require video production skill, and the output quality is sufficient for professional internal use.


What Synthesia Actually Does

Synthesia is a browser-based platform for creating AI-generated video featuring a human presenter — an “avatar” — speaking scripted content. The avatar lip-syncs accurately to the input script, can be rendered in 140 languages, and can be customized with organizational branding, background environments, and overlaid graphics. That is the core product. The full platform has expanded significantly from that foundation.

SCORM Export: The Feature HeyGen Doesn’t Have

SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is the technical standard for packaging e-learning content so it can be tracked and managed by a Learning Management System. When a learner watches a SCORM-packaged video module in an LMS like Docebo, Moodle, or SAP Litmos, the LMS receives structured data: did the learner complete the module? Did they pass the embedded quiz? How long did they watch?

This is not a marginal feature for enterprise L&D. It is the foundational requirement for compliance training. Organizations in regulated industries — finance, healthcare, pharmaceutical, legal, manufacturing — are legally required to demonstrate that specific employees completed specific training modules. Without SCORM, video content cannot be inserted into the compliance tracking infrastructure that satisfies those requirements.

HeyGen does not offer SCORM export. D-ID does not offer SCORM export. Runway does not offer SCORM export. Pika does not offer SCORM export.

Synthesia does, on Enterprise plans.

This single feature explains a significant fraction of Synthesia’s enterprise penetration. An AI video tool that cannot integrate with the compliance tracking infrastructure of large organizations is a productivity tool. An AI video tool that can is a compliance infrastructure tool. The difference in how IT security, legal, and L&D departments evaluate and approve those two categories is enormous.

MCP Server: Not Yet

Synthesia does not have an official MCP server as of this writing. The company is not listed in the Anthropic MCP registry. One community-maintained GitHub repository (TPFLegionaire/synthesia-mcp) was created in April 2025 but has zero stars and essentially no activity — it is not a functional resource.

This is a meaningful gap relative to HeyGen, which launched an official MCP server (available at heygen.com/model-context-protocol) that covers credits, voices, avatars, and video generation. HeyGen’s MCP server is listed in the Anthropic registry and supports Claude Web, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Gemini CLI, and Cursor.

The absence of an MCP server does not affect Synthesia’s core enterprise L&D market — enterprise L&D buyers do not require MCP integration. The practical split: An organization producing marketing videos, sales prospecting videos, or consumer-facing content will likely prefer HeyGen’s product, API, and MCP integration. An organization running a compliance training program, onboarding curriculum, or multilingual L&D initiative inside a Fortune 500 structure will likely require Synthesia’s SCORM, LMS integrations, SSO, and governance certifications regardless of HeyGen’s feature quality.

Synthesia vs. Colossyan

Colossyan is Synthesia’s most direct L&D-segment competitor. Both target enterprise training video specifically. The practical difference is scale: Synthesia has 50,000+ customers, Fortune 100 penetration, and $100M ARR. Colossyan is building in the same direction but from a smaller base with fewer integrations and lower enterprise penetration. For organizations evaluating both, Synthesia’s LMS ecosystem, compliance certifications, and case study depth give it a substantial procurement advantage.

Synthesia vs. D-ID

D-ID’s primary strength is its developer-first API and real-time video agent capabilities for customer-facing applications — chatbots, digital assistants, interactive customer service avatars. Synthesia’s “Video Agents” feature (listed as “coming soon”) intends to compete in this space, but D-ID has a head start in the real-time, developer-API-first segment. For production video workflows and L&D, Synthesia has no meaningful competition from D-ID.


What Synthesia Is Not

It is not a creative video tool. Runway, Pika, Kling, and Sora generate cinematic motion video from prompts or images. Synthesia generates a person speaking to a camera. The use cases are almost entirely distinct. A creative agency producing a film or advertisement is not Synthesia’s customer.

It is not the cheapest way to make a talking-head video. For individual creators or small teams who need occasional presenter video, HeyGen’s pricing and UX are more accessible. Synthesia’s pricing is structured for organizational procurement, not individual creative use.

It does not yet have an MCP server. For developers building AI-native workflows that orchestrate tools via MCP, Synthesia is not yet a first-class participant. HeyGen is ahead here.

It does not offer real-time streaming avatars. HeyGen’s LiveAvatar feature enables interactive video experiences via WebRTC. Synthesia’s production video workflow is asynchronous — you submit a script, a video is generated and returned. The “Video Agents” feature on Synthesia’s roadmap suggests this will change, but the real-time capability does not exist today.

Why the Adobe Rejection Matters

The decision to decline a reported $3 billion acquisition from Adobe — and then accept a £10M strategic investment at a $4B valuation — is worth interpreting carefully.

A $3 billion acquisition offer from Adobe would have been a significant outcome for any AI startup by any measure. Synthesia’s founders, investors, and board evaluated that offer and concluded that the independent trajectory was more valuable.

The October 2025 Series E at $4B proved the arithmetic correct on a short time horizon. But the more interesting signal is the nature of the deal they did take: a small strategic investment from Adobe that buys alignment on content authenticity standards, joint enterprise positioning, and a seat in the Content Authenticity Initiative without surrendering independence, roadmap control, or the option to partner with Adobe’s competitors.

Google Ventures and Nvidia’s NVentures then led a $200M Series E. The outcome is a company with Adobe, Google, and Nvidia on its cap table — the three most significant players in enterprise AI creation infrastructure — while remaining independent and operating toward a valuation trajectory that the founders clearly believe will exceed any acquisition price offered to date.

SCORM export, 20+ LMS integrations, ISO 42001, Fortune 100 penetration at 90%+, the Heineken/SAP/Moody’s case study depth, and a governance architecture that satisfies enterprise procurement teams across regulated industries add up to a product that has carved out territory competitors cannot easily take without years of enterprise sales investment.

The funding trajectory ($545M+ raised, $4B valuation) and revenue scale ($100M+ ARR, tripling enterprise contracts) confirm that the market is real and the company is executing. The Series E with Google Ventures and Nvidia is a signal from the infrastructure layer that Synthesia’s position is worth protecting.

What keeps it at four instead of five:

The absence of an MCP server is a genuine gap as the ecosystem moves toward tool orchestration. The deepfake misuse incident in 2023 — however responsibly addressed — is a reminder that high-quality avatar technology has real misuse risk that governance frameworks partially but not completely mitigate.
