Four model launches that builders built planning assumptions around have all gone sideways in different ways: one is under government suspension, one has no official existence, one appeared in consumer products but not in the API, and one was promised for “June” at I/O and is still limited to a handful of enterprise accounts.

Update (2026-07-31): All four delays below have since resolved, in different directions. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 were fully restored on June 30, 2026 after the export controls were lifted (Anthropic; CNBC). GPT-5.6 shipped in limited preview on June 26 and publicly on July 9, 2026 (OpenAI; CNBC). Grok V9-Medium shipped through the API as Grok 4.5 on July 8–9, 2026 — a rename/repackaging, not a separate later model (TechCrunch). Gemini 3.5 Pro is the outlier: as of July 21, 2026 it still had not shipped, having missed three successive target dates (June, then July, then a widely reported July 17) (TechCrunch). Fable 5 / Mythos 5 (Anthropic)

What happened: Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 on June 9. What exists is a Polymarket contract with $960,000+ in bets placed (as of June 15) assigning roughly 83% probability to a launch in the June 22–28 window, and a Slack message from OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki describing GPT-5.6 as a “meaningful improvement” over GPT-5.5, which reached the public via a screenshot posted to X (source post; Tech Times coverage). Unconfirmed leaks reported by Tech Times suggest a 1.5 million token context window, improved agentic workflows, and stronger multimodal capability — none of this is confirmed by OpenAI.

Where things stand (June 19): Unannounced. GPT-5.6 is not late by any official measure because it was never officially scheduled. The 83% probability on June 22–28 reflects market consensus, not a commitment from OpenAI. The June 22 window is three days out.

What happened: xAI completed training on Grok V9-Medium on May 25 — a 1.5-trillion-parameter model (three times the 0.5T “v8-small” model then serving Grok’s production traffic), with what Elon Musk described as substantial supplementary training on Cursor developer-workflow data. The expected ship window was “mid-June 2026.”

Where things stand (June 19): The mid-June window has passed. Grok V9-Medium appeared in the consumer Grok product on X and SuperGrok on June 16. But grok-v9-medium does not appear in the xAI API documentation as of June 18 — the API currently lists grok-4.3, grok-4.20 variants, and grok-build-0.1. API access is still pending.

The practical implication is not that the models won’t ship. Most of them probably will, in the June–July window. The implication is that planning horizons in AI infrastructure need more slack than the release cadence implies.

If your team’s roadmap has a June 30 checkpoint that assumes Fable 5 is back online, GPT-5.6 is stable in the API, V9-Medium is evaluated, and Gemini 3.5 Pro is GA — that plan needs revision. At least two of those things are not going to be true by June 30.

The window between now and July 15 should resolve most of this. June 20 closes the Fable 5 refund window. June 22–28 is the GPT-5.6 launch window. July 1 is the Kalshi-priced probability gate for Fable 5 restoration. Gemini 3.5 Pro is likely to follow shortly after or during that window.

The safest posture for the next two weeks: use what is available and production-stable, keep your integration layer provider-agnostic, and evaluate new models against real workloads rather than benchmarks as they become accessible.
