The WWDC 2026 keynote ran Monday, June 8 at 10am PT. It is over. The developer beta shipped the same day.

Before the keynote, there were five questions every AI builder needed answered. This is that answer guide — what was confirmed, what wasn’t, and what you should do today.


Question 1: Is Siri Extensions open, or invite-only?

Answer: Open — standard Apple Developer Program membership only ($99/year).

This was the most important signal for smaller AI providers. Apple confirmed at the keynote that any provider that implements the Extensions SDK can ship an Extension. There is no separate entitlement, no special invitation, no gated approval tier beyond the standard App Store review process.

The three named providers at launch are Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT (OpenAI), and Gemini (Google standalone). These providers appeared in early builds and will be Apple’s demo examples. But they are not the only providers who can ship — they are simply the ones who had lead time before the keynote.

What Apple has not announced yet: a formal public enrollment process for being listed as an “official” Extensions-compatible provider in System Settings. The SDK is open. The first-party listing UI — where users go to pick their AI provider — may still have a curated set at iOS 27 launch. Developers can start building today; the question of promotional listing placement versus the full open marketplace may resolve in a later developer beta.

Builder action: If you ship an AI product (model, assistant, agent platform), download the iOS 27 developer beta and pull the Extensions SDK documentation now. The public release is September 2026 — you have roughly three months. That is enough time to build quality Extensions support, but not enough time to start late.

If you integrate AI APIs into an app (you call Claude or GPT-5 from your product but don’t ship an AI product yourself), Extensions are irrelevant to your work. Your users’ Extensions choice is their own; you have no new surface to build or worry about.


Question 2: Is per-category AI routing confirmed?

Answer: Yes — confirmed at the keynote.

Users can configure different AI providers for different categories in the same Settings screen where they pick their primary Extension. Confirmed category routing at launch: research queries, coding assistance, creative writing. The setting is per-category, not per-query — users configure it once.

This changes the competitive dynamic substantially. Being the best at one category is more valuable than being second-best at everything. A specialized coding AI that routes all coding queries through its Extension beats a general-purpose model that handles coding adequately but isn’t the user’s preference for it.

Builder action: Identify your category strengths and build your Extension to showcase them clearly. When users see the per-category Settings UI, the category labels will be the frame through which they evaluate each provider. Position accordingly.


Question 3: What exactly is Core AI, and does it break existing Core ML code?

Answer: Core AI is the new on-device framework for LLMs and generative AI. Existing Core ML code is not broken — the old framework still works.

Core ML has powered on-device ML on Apple devices since 2017. It was built for frozen models and batch inference — image classifiers, text classification, tabular prediction. It was not designed for streaming token generation, multi-turn context, or dynamic routing between local and cloud execution.

Core AI is a parallel framework, not a replacement at the API level. What ships in iOS 27:

  • Local LLM inference on Neural Engine, GPU, and CPU — no network connection required
  • Cloud routing — apps describe a capability (e.g., “long context summarization”), Core AI decides at runtime whether to use on-device or cloud execution based on privacy requirements and hardware constraints
  • Persistent agent memory — multi-turn context stored on-device across sessions
  • Extensions integration — when on-device capacity isn’t sufficient, Core AI can route to the user’s configured Siri Extension provider

Existing .mlmodel and .mlpackage files continue to work in iOS 27. Core ML is not being removed. The pattern Apple is signaling is UIKit/SwiftUI coexistence: both work for years, but new platform capabilities ship exclusively in the new framework.

Builder action:

  • New iOS projects with on-device AI: Build on Core AI. The documentation is in the iOS 27 beta now. Don’t start a new on-device LLM project on Core ML in 2026.
  • Existing Core ML projects: Do not rush migration. Assess the documented migration path from WWDC session materials before committing. Core ML works through iOS 27 and likely well beyond.

Question 4: What did Foundation Models add?

Answer: Image input (multimodal), larger context window, fine-tuning support, and a bigger model.

The Foundation Models framework — which gives Swift apps direct access to Apple’s on-device language model — shipped its first major expansion at WWDC 2026:

  • Image input confirmed. Apps can now pass images as input alongside text. This covers the most common reason developers were still bundling third-party vision models (Llama Vision, Mistral Pixtral, and others) in their iOS apps to handle image queries.
  • Larger base model. The on-device model in iOS 27 is substantially larger than the Foundation Models model that shipped in iOS 26. Context window expanded; performance benchmarks improved.
  • Fine-tuning support. Developers can fine-tune the on-device Foundation Model for their app’s domain using on-device training. This is the first time Apple has exposed fine-tuning as an on-device developer primitive.

Builder action: If your app bundles a third-party on-device vision model purely to handle image input, evaluate whether Foundation Models now covers your use case. Apple’s on-device model has significant advantages: privacy, no API costs, no latency from model loading, and no storage overhead from bundling a separate model weight file. Run your eval against Foundation Models before assuming you still need a bundled third-party model.


Question 5: Did the iPhone Fold appear?

Answer: Previewed, not shipped. Hardware comes in September 2026.

Apple previewed the foldable iPhone at WWDC — it exists, it was shown, but it ships in September alongside iOS 27’s public release. Key hardware specs confirmed: 5.5-inch display folded, 7.8-inch display open.

The developer-facing implications are forward-looking. Adaptive layout APIs for the folded/unfolded state transition are in the iOS 27 beta. Foundation Models and Core AI are both available on the iPhone Fold — Apple did not introduce a separate compute tier for the form factor. Developers with existing adaptive layout code should expect their apps to work reasonably well at launch.

Builder action: If adaptive layout or dynamic UI is part of your product, test against the iPhone Fold simulator form factor in Xcode with the iOS 27 beta. The September launch window is tight. Apps that look broken on the new hardware on day one lose early adopter users to competitors.


What Wasn’t Answered

Two things remain unconfirmed after the keynote:

The formal Extensions listing process for new providers. Apple hasn’t announced the exact mechanism for a new AI provider to apply for listing in the System Settings AI picker UI. Building Extensions support today is clear (SDK is open). How users will discover and configure your Extension in Settings beyond the initial three named providers is not yet public.

iPhone Fold-specific Core AI behavior. Apple confirmed both modes (folded/unfolded) run Foundation Models and Core AI. Whether the fold state affects routing decisions — e.g., whether Core AI prefers cloud routing when in the compact folded form factor to preserve battery — isn’t documented yet.

Both gaps should close in later developer betas during WWDC session content rolling out through June 8–12.


The Developer Beta Is Live Today

Every Apple platform — iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 — shipped its first developer beta at the end of the June 8 keynote. The Extensions SDK is in beta 1. The Core AI framework documentation is in the beta. Foundation Models multimodal APIs are documented.

You need an Apple Developer Program membership ($99/year). If you build on Apple platforms and don’t have one, this week is a reasonable moment to get it.
