Workflow automation platforms already save time by connecting apps and running processes without code. MCP servers add a new dimension:
- Natural language workflow creation. Instead of dragging nodes in a visual builder, describe what you want — “when a new Stripe payment comes in, add a row to Google Sheets and send a Slack message.” The agent builds the workflow.
- Operational monitoring. “Why did yesterday’s data pipeline fail?” is a natural language question. With an MCP server, your agent can check run history, inspect logs, and diagnose failures.
- Cross-platform awareness. An agent with access to multiple workflow MCP servers can compare approaches — “should I build this in n8n or Airflow?” — with actual knowledge of what each platform supports.

czlonkowski/n8n-mcp — 23,000+ stars, TypeScript, MIT. The most-starred MCP server in any automation category, and one of the most starred MCP servers period. Up from 15,400 stars in March 2026 — a rapid climb since.
Why it wins: Complete n8n SDK accessible through MCP. Provides structured access to 2,412 n8n nodes (829 core + 1,583 community, 1,340 community nodes verified) with 99% property coverage. 2,352 workflow templates. Workflow CRUD with validation and autofix. Execution management — trigger, retrieve results, list history. Multiple deployment options: hosted service, Docker, npx, local install, Railway cloud.
The scale is real: n8n itself has 200,000+ GitHub stars. czlonkowski/n8n-mcp is the primary bridge for AI-assisted workflow building, and the 23,000+-star count reflects genuine adoption, not just curiosity.
The catch: It’s a community server, not official from n8n. The n8n MCP ecosystem is unusually crowded — competing implementations include salacoste/mcp-n8n-workflow-builder (230 stars, 17 tools, multi-instance support, active), leonardsellem/n8n-mcp-server (1,600 stars but stale since mid-2025 — last commit June 30, 2025), spences10/mcp-n8n-builder (84 stars), and vredrick/n8n-mcp (34 stars). czlonkowski is the clear winner by every metric, but the fragmentation means you need to choose carefully.
Zapier MCP (Official)
zapier/zapier-mcp — 374 stars, Official, TypeScript, MIT, remote-first at mcp.zapier.com. Access to 9,000+ apps and 30,000+ actions without local installation.
April 2026: Agentic Beta launched. Zapier shipped a major architectural shift in April 2026 — 14 static meta-tools across five categories that let AI agents dynamically discover, enable, and disable actions within a conversation. Instead of pre-configuring every action in the dashboard, agents can now browse Zapier’s app catalog and activate integrations on the fly. This moves Zapier from a static tool provider to a dynamic integration discovery platform.
Architecture. Two modes: classic (configure actions in dashboard, each becomes a callable tool) and the new Agentic Beta (agents self-serve from the full 9,000+ app catalog). Authentication via API key (personal) or OAuth (multi-user apps).
Strengths: Unmatched breadth — no other MCP server connects to as many services. Zero local setup. Two auth modes for different use cases. The Agentic Beta is genuinely novel — no other platform lets agents discover and enable integrations at runtime.
Weaknesses: Indirection — you’re calling Zapier’s API, which calls the target app’s API. Higher latency, harder debugging, dependency on Zapier’s uptime and pricing. Agentic Beta is still beta.
Best for: Teams already on Zapier who want the broadest possible integration surface from their AI agent, especially with the new Agentic mode.
Make MCP (Official)
Make MCP — Official, hosted. The GitHub repo (integromat/make-mcp-server, 166 stars) is now marked as legacy — Make has fully shifted to a cloud-hosted MCP server at developers.make.com/mcp-server.
Scenario-first model. Instead of individual actions (Zapier’s approach), Make exposes entire scenarios as MCP tools. Build a 20-step automation in Make’s visual builder, then expose the whole thing as a single callable tool. The server auto-discovers on-demand scenarios and resolves parameter descriptions.
Strengths: One tool call can trigger complex multi-step automations. Structured JSON responses. Hosted server is the recommended path — no self-hosting needed.
Weaknesses: Requires pre-building scenarios in Make’s UI. GitHub repo stagnating (marked legacy). Less community momentum than n8n or Zapier.
Best for: Teams with complex, pre-built Make scenarios who want to trigger them via AI.
Pipedream MCP
Pipedream MCP — Official, remote hosted. Access to 3,000+ apps with 10,000+ tools, managed OAuth and credential storage.
Developer-focused. Pipedream combines event-driven architecture with serverless code execution — agents can trigger Node.js or Python functions, listen for webhooks, and chain multi-step workflows. Strengths: 3,000+ APIs with managed auth. Serverless code execution alongside integrations. Built-in credential encryption. SDK examples for building custom AI apps on top of the MCP server.
Weaknesses: Remote-only (dependency on Pipedream infrastructure). Less community MCP ecosystem compared to n8n.
Best for: Developer teams who want code flexibility alongside pre-built integrations, especially for building AI-powered products.
ActivePieces
activepieces/activepieces — 23,700+ stars, TypeScript, MIT, self-hostable. 280+ integration pieces automatically available as MCP servers, per the project’s own README.
Architecture is unique. Every piece (integration) contributed to ActivePieces automatically becomes an MCP server. This means 280+ services — Gmail, Slack, Stripe, HubSpot, and more — are each individually callable as MCP tools, without a separate MCP server project. ActivePieces has aggressively rebranded around MCP and AI agents, now positioning itself as “AI Agents & MCPs & AI Workflow Automation.”
Strengths: Largest integration-to-MCP pipeline (every piece = MCP tool). Self-hostable with MIT license. Native AI agents built in. Y Combinator backed. Standard and Ultimate plans include unlimited MCP servers.
Weaknesses: The “every piece is an MCP server” approach means many small servers rather than one comprehensive one. Less mature MCP ecosystem compared to n8n. Community is growing but smaller.
Best for: Teams who want a self-hosted Zapier alternative where every integration is MCP-accessible by default.

yangkyeongmo/mcp-server-apache-airflow — 173 stars, Python, MIT, v0.2.10 (February 6, 2026), still the latest release. Wraps the full Apache Airflow REST API v1.
Why it wins: 70+ operations across DAGs, runs, tasks, variables, connections, pools, datasets, and monitoring. Read-only mode for non-destructive operations — critical when connecting AI agents to production Airflow. Selective API group configuration. Basic Auth and JWT tokens.
The catch: Community-built, not official. Still on Airflow API v1 — has not yet added Airflow 3.0 support. Astronomer’s official server (astro-airflow-mcp) offered consolidated, AI-friendly tools — but it was archived on January 23, 2026, leaving the community server as the primary option.
Strong alternative: call518/MCP-Airflow-API
call518/MCP-Airflow-API — 51 stars, Python, v3.6.6 (April 30, 2026). Very actively maintained. 45 tools — 43 shared tools plus 2 v2-exclusive asset management tools for data-aware scheduling.
The key differentiator: Full Airflow 3.0+ API v2 support with dynamic version selection via AIRFLOW_API_VERSION environment variable. Apache Airflow shipped 3.2.0 on April 7, 2026 and has since moved on to 3.3.0 (released July 6, 2026) — this server is the only MCP option in this comparison that properly supports the current v2 Airflow API. Covers cluster management, service operations, configuration, and status monitoring. If you’re running Airflow 3.x, this is the better choice over yangkyeongmo.
Dagster MCP
kyryl-opens-ml/mcp-server-dagster — 22 stars, Python, Apache 2.0, v0.1.2. 9 tools: list repositories/jobs/assets, recent runs, get run info, launch runs, materialize assets, terminate runs, get asset info.
Effectively dormant — last commit April 9, 2025, now well over a year old. No official Dagster MCP server exists. A community alternative, fabdendev/dagster-mcp (10 stars, now published to PyPI as v0.8.0), wraps Dagster’s GraphQL API and is actively maintained, though it’s still described by its own maintainer as “pre-1.0” with modest traction.
Code-First Orchestration Engines
The winner: Prefect MCP (Official)

PrefectHQ/prefect-mcp-server — 49 stars, Python, MIT, official, experimental (v0.0.1-beta.12, June 2026). 10+ tools.
Why it wins (by default): The only actively maintained, officially backed code-first orchestration MCP server. Intelligent debugging for troubleshooting failures — not just raw API access. Multi-tenant HTTP auth. Deployable to FastMCP Cloud. CLI skill support for mutations. New: available as a Claude Code plugin via the plugin marketplace, lowering the setup barrier.
The catch: Still experimental with a “may change drastically” warning. Lower tool count than Airflow servers. But actively developed (last push April 21, 2026).
Temporal: improving
brief-hq/temporal-mcp — 60 stars, Go, MIT. Archived January 29, 2026. Was the most promising Temporal MCP server with 19 tools.
The picture has improved slightly. GethosTheWalrus/temporal-mcp — 49 stars, v1.9.0 (July 29, 2026) — has emerged as the leading community alternative. Listed on Temporal’s Code Exchange. Covers workflow start/describe/list/query/history and schedule management. Actively maintained, with commits as recent as August 2026.
Temporal itself has NOT released an official MCP server — their repos are educational (edu-ai-workshop-mcp, tutorials about building durable MCP servers using Temporal, not MCP servers for Temporal). The story is less fragmented than in March, with GethosTheWalrus as a clear pick, but still no official backing.

Each tool maps to a core Kestra concept — more AI-friendly than raw API wrapping. Configurable tool disabling via environment variables restricts what agents can do. Supports both OSS and Enterprise installations.
The 11-tool count is modest but well-chosen. Kestra’s parent project (27,700+ stars) is a well-established event-driven orchestration platform.

Four ecosystem trends
1. Agentic mode is arriving. Zapier’s Agentic Beta is the first workflow MCP server where agents discover and enable their own integrations at runtime, rather than using a pre-configured set of tools. This is a fundamentally different architecture — the agent decides what it needs, not the human administrator. If other platforms follow, the “configure your MCP tools in advance” era may be ending.
2. Hosted MCP is becoming the default. Make fully deprecated its GitHub repo in favor of a hosted server. Zapier and Pipedream were always remote-first. The open-source self-hosted story (n8n, ActivePieces) remains strong, but the industry trajectory is clear: vendors want you on their managed MCP endpoints.
3. Airflow 3.0 is splitting the ecosystem. Apache Airflow 3.2.0 shipped in April 2026 with a new v2 API, asset management, and multi-team deployments. call518/MCP-Airflow-API adapted immediately; yangkyeongmo’s more popular server hasn’t. This is a concrete example of how fast-moving upstream platforms can create gaps in their MCP tooling.
4. Code-first orchestration is still underserved. Temporal finally has a clear community pick (GethosTheWalrus, 49 stars), Prefect is officially backed but experimental, and Dagster’s MCP server has been dormant for well over a year. Low-code platforms continue to dominate MCP maturity.

The data orchestration and code-first side is improving incrementally but still lags. Airflow’s biggest news is Airflow 3.2.0, but only call518’s MCP server has adapted to the new API. Temporal finally has a clear community pick (GethosTheWalrus) instead of fragmentation. Dagster’s MCP server is dormant after a full year with no updates.
The biggest story this month is Zapier’s Agentic Beta.
