The market numbers reflect why this matters. AI in retail reached approximately $12–31 billion in 2024–2025 (depending on scope) and is projected to grow to $63–165 billion by 2030–2034, with CAGRs ranging from 18% to 32%. Hospitality AI reached $16.3 billion in 2023, heading toward $70.3 billion by 2031 at 20% CAGR. 89% of retailers are actively using or assessing AI, though only 7% have fully scaled deployments — a gap that standardized protocols like MCP are designed to close.
MCP provides a structured protocol for connecting AI assistants to commerce systems. Rather than building custom integrations for each e-commerce platform, POS system, hotel PMS, or payment processor, MCP-connected agents can search product catalogs, manage shopping carts, process payments, check hotel availability, make restaurant reservations, and track orders — all through defined tool interfaces with consistent authentication and error handling.

Why Retail and Hospitality Need MCP
These industries share characteristics that make standardized AI integration both valuable and urgent:
The customer interface is shifting to AI agents. When a customer asks their AI assistant to “find me a hotel in Barcelona for next weekend under €200” or “order more printer paper from our usual supplier,” the agent needs to query availability, compare options, and complete transactions across multiple providers. Without a standard protocol, each provider needs a custom integration — which is why Shopify built MCP into every store and Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol with Shopify, Target, Walmart, Wayfair, and Etsy as partners.
Platform fragmentation is pervasive. A mid-size retailer might run Shopify for e-commerce, Square for in-store POS, Stripe for payment processing, HubSpot for CRM, and a third-party warehouse management system — all with separate APIs, authentication methods, and data formats. A hotel chain faces similar fragmentation across property management systems, channel managers, booking engines, and guest experience platforms. MCP servers that wrap these diverse systems into standard tool interfaces make cross-platform commerce operations practical.
Real-time inventory and availability matter. A hotel room sold twice is a crisis. An e-commerce order placed for out-of-stock items erodes trust. Restaurant reservations for fully-booked timeslots waste everyone’s time. Commerce MCP servers must return current, accurate data — stale catalog information or delayed inventory updates can cost real revenue and damage customer relationships.
Transactions have financial consequences. Unlike informational queries, commerce operations move money. A misconfigured payment tool, an incorrectly applied discount, or a fraudulent order processed by an AI agent has direct financial impact. This makes proper authentication, permission scoping, and audit trails essential in commerce MCP implementations.
The long tail of platforms is massive. While Shopify and Stripe dominate mindshare, the commerce ecosystem includes hundreds of platforms — from Magento and WooCommerce to Toast and Clover for restaurants, Apaleo and Opera for hotels, Lightspeed and Square for POS. MCP’s value proposition grows with this fragmentation, providing a single protocol that agents can use regardless of which specific platforms a merchant uses.
E-Commerce Platforms
E-commerce has the most mature MCP ecosystem in the retail space, led by Shopify’s decision to make MCP a native feature of every store.
Shopify — MCP Built Into Every Store
Shopify Storefront MCP is built into every Shopify store at /api/mcp since the Summer 2025 Edition — no setup, configuration, or additional app installation required. This is arguably the most significant MCP deployment in commerce: every Shopify store (millions of merchants) is automatically MCP-enabled. Tools include product search, customer support and FAQ handling, cart management, and checkout initiation. The Storefront MCP lets AI agents browse a store’s catalog, add items to carts, and start checkout flows — turning every Shopify store into an AI-accessible storefront.
Shopify also provides a Customer Accounts MCP server for authenticated operations like order tracking, returns, and account management — handling the post-purchase side of the customer journey. A separate Shopify Dev MCP server (shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/devmcp) provides development and debugging tools for app builders.
MCP-UI is an open-source Shopify extension (published August 2025) that enables rich interactive UI components in MCP responses — breaking beyond text-only interactions to show product cards, image carousels, and interactive elements within AI conversations. This addresses a key limitation of text-only MCP responses for visual commerce.
Shopify Community Servers
GeLi2001/shopify-mcp (github.com/GeLi2001/shopify-mcp — 174 stars) is the most popular community Shopify MCP server, providing 31 tools across products (8 tools), customers (8), orders (10), draft orders (1), metafields (3), inventory (1), and tags (1). Built on the GraphQL Admin API with cursor-based pagination, sorting, and advanced filtering. Where Shopify’s official Storefront MCP focuses on the shopping experience, this server provides full admin-level control for merchants managing their stores.
Additional community implementations include pashpashpash/shopify-mcp-server (10 stars) for product/customer/order management, antoineschaller/shopify-mcp-server with 22 tools including analytics, and QuentinCody/shopify-storefront-mcp-server focused on storefront and customer data access.
WooCommerce — WordPress Commerce via MCP
techspawn/woocommerce-mcp-server (github.com/techspawn/woocommerce-mcp-server — 83 stars) provides comprehensive WooCommerce integration through the REST API. The WordPress/mcp-adapter (github.com/WordPress/mcp-adapter) is the official MCP adapter from WordPress itself, bridging the WordPress Abilities API to MCP. When WooCommerce is installed, it exposes WooCommerce operations as MCP tools while respecting WooCommerce’s permission system and using REST API keys for authentication.
iOSDevSK/mcp-for-woocommerce is a WordPress community plugin providing both STDIO and HTTP streamable transport, optional JWT auth, and read-only tools with permalink fields — built on Automattic’s official WordPress MCP foundation.
Magento 2

BigCommerce has smaller MCP presence with isaacgounton/bigcommerce-api-mcp (3 stars) providing product, customer, and order management with multiple server modes (stdio, SSE, streamable HTTP).
Google Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
Google UCP (ucp.dev) deserves special attention as an emerging standard for agentic commerce that integrates with MCP. Backed by Google with 20+ global partners including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, UCP provides a standardized protocol for product discovery, multi-item cart management, real-time product details, agentic checkout, and identity linking for loyalty programs. It supports both REST API and MCP bindings, along with Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol. Currently US-only as of March 2026, expanding globally. UCP represents the convergence of major retailers around a standard that lets any AI agent shop any participating store.
Point of Sale (POS) Systems
Square — Official MCP Server
Square MCP Server (github.com/square/square-mcp-server — 95 stars) is Square’s official MCP integration, currently in beta. It provides 3 core tools (get_service_info, get_type_info, make_api_request) that expose access to 40+ Square API services: payments, orders, customers, catalog management, bookings, loyalty programs, and inventory. Available as a remote MCP server via OAuth at https://mcp.squareup.com/sse or as a local deployment with access tokens. A read-only mode limits operations to non-destructive queries — sensible for a system that handles financial transactions.
Square’s approach of exposing its full API surface through MCP rather than creating individual tools for each operation gives agents flexibility but requires understanding of Square’s API structure to use effectively.
Lightspeed — Third-Party Integrations
Lightspeed Retail has no official MCP server but has attracted multiple third-party integrations. Zapier MCP connects Lightspeed X-Series actions with AI tools. viaSocket MCP and SyncHub Connector (R-Series) provide additional integration paths. A community implementation on LobeHub offers a “2026 Complete Version” with tools for sales, items, inventory updates, customer management, and register operations. Lightspeed Restaurant POS (O-Series/Kounta) also has a SyncHub MCP connector.
Notable POS Gaps
Toast — the major restaurant POS system — has no dedicated MCP server despite having an integration partner directory. Clover — widely used in small business retail — also has no MCP presence. These represent significant gaps given the installed base of both platforms.
Payment Processing
Payment processing has the strongest official MCP adoption of any retail subcategory, with the three major payment platforms all offering official servers.
Stripe — The Gold Standard
Stripe MCP Server (github.com/stripe/ai — 1,400 stars) is the most-starred payment MCP server and part of Stripe’s broader Agentic Commerce Suite launched in March 2026. Provides 25 tools across 13 categories: customers, products, invoices, subscriptions, refunds, payment links, and documentation access. Available as a remote server via OAuth at https://mcp.stripe.com or locally via npx -y @stripe/mcp --api-key=YOUR_KEY. The package also includes @stripe/agent-toolkit with integrations for OpenAI, LangChain, CrewAI, and Vercel AI SDK. Adyen — Enterprise Payments

Apaleo MCP Server (apaleo.com) is the first property management system to launch an MCP server, covering 2,000+ properties across 30+ countries. Provides 29+ tools for scheduling and booking automation: check availability, modify bookings, update rates, amend loyalty records, notify housekeeping, trigger billing, and cross-system operations. Apaleo’s API-first architecture means every hotel function is accessible via API, and the MCP server makes all of it available to AI agents. The Apaleo Store provides hundreds of hospitality app integrations that can also be orchestrated through MCP.
Agentic Hospitality — First MCP Hotel Booking
Agentic Hospitality (agentichospitality.com) achieved the industry’s first hotel booking made entirely through MCP — at Rose St. Gardens in Dominica. Their TravelOS MCP Server provides real-time availability, rates, and inventory inside AI assistants. Additional products include an Agentic Booking Engine, Schema Adapter, Channel Manager, and AgentSite AI CMS. Proprietary metrics include the MCP Intent Matrix (MIM) and Signal-to-Action Ratio (SAR) for measuring agentic booking performance. This represents the leading edge of AI-native hotel distribution — bypassing traditional OTA channels entirely.
Airbnb Search
mcp-server-airbnb (github.com/openbnb-org/mcp-server-airbnb — 406 stars) is the highest-starred hospitality MCP server, providing location-based Airbnb search, Google Maps Place ID integration, date/guest/price filtering, and detailed property info including amenities and house rules. No API key required; robots.txt compliant by default. Available in DXT format for Claude Desktop.
Booking.com Search
hotels_mcp_server (github.com/esakrissa/hotels_mcp_server — 15 stars) provides destination search and hotel lookup via the Booking.com API through RapidAPI. Features room configurations, pricing with discounts, guest ratings, image galleries, and star classifications.
Industry Perspective
Hotel distribution veteran Mirai has written about MCP as “the bridge that will allow hotels to compete in the era of AI assistants” — arguing that MCP gives hotels a chance to reclaim direct guest relationships from OTAs. When AI agents can query a hotel’s PMS directly via MCP instead of going through Booking.com or Expedia, the distribution economics shift dramatically in favor of hotels.
Restaurant and Food Service
Restaurant MCP is early-stage, with most servers focused on discovery and ordering rather than back-of-house operations.
Reservation Systems
restaurant-mcp (github.com/jrklein343-svg/restaurant-mcp — 2 stars) unifies Resy and OpenTable search with 12 tools: search_restaurants, check_availability, make_reservation, list_reservations, cancel_reservation, credential management, and an automated reservation “sniper” for high-demand slots. Food Delivery
Uber Eats MCP Server (github.com/ericzakariasson/uber-eats-mcp-server — 216 stars) is a proof-of-concept using Playwright browser automation for restaurant search, menu exploration, and food ordering. While not suitable for production use, it demonstrates the demand for AI-agent food ordering.

Notable Gaps
Kitchen display systems (KDS) have no MCP servers — a significant gap for restaurant operations. Menu management is absent despite platforms like CloudKitchens having the technology. Toast POS — the dominant restaurant POS — has no MCP integration. Restaurant back-of-house operations remain largely unconnected to the MCP ecosystem.

No dedicated MCP servers exist for retail foot traffic analysis, standalone demand forecasting, or visual merchandising analytics. Security and Trust Considerations
Commerce MCP implementations handle financial transactions, personal customer data, and business-critical inventory — making security considerations especially important.
Payment security requires strict scoping. Stripe’s RAK-controlled permissions, Square’s read-only mode, and Adyen’s TEST/LIVE environment separation all reflect the need to limit what AI agents can do with payment tools. An agent that can create $10 payment links should not automatically be able to issue $10,000 refunds.
