Magic MCP is “v0 in your IDE.” Where Vercel’s v0 generates UI components in a web browser, Magic MCP does it inside Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, and Cline through the Model Context Protocol. You type /ui create a modern navigation bar with responsive design in your AI agent’s chat, and Magic generates a polished React/TypeScript component drawn from 21st.dev’s curated library, then drops it directly into your project.
Built by Sergey Bunas and Serafim Korablev at 21st Labs (YC Winter 2026 batch), the server is currently in beta. The repository lives at 21st-dev/magic-mcp.
What It Does
Magic MCP exposes a small set of tools focused on UI component generation:
21st_magic_component_builder— the primary tool. Takes a natural language description and generates a complete React/TypeScript component. Searches 21st.dev’s curated library of pre-tested components and returns production-ready code with proper props, TypeScript types, and responsive styling.21st_magic_component_inspiration— browse the component library for design inspiration before generating.- SVGL integration — access thousands of professional brand logos and icons for use in generated components.
The workflow is straightforward: describe what you want in plain English, get multiple component variations with different styles, pick the one you like, and it integrates into your project automatically. Generated components use shadcn/ui, Tailwind CSS, and Radix UI — the modern React component stack.
The key distinction from pure AI code generation: Magic doesn’t hallucinate components from scratch. It searches a curated library of tested components and adapts them to your description. This means generated code follows established patterns rather than inventing novel (and potentially broken) approaches.

Pricing: Freemium model. Free tier includes a limited number of monthly component generations (reviewers report the free allowance runs out quickly — ~5 requests in early testing). Paid plan is $20/month for higher limits. During beta, some features may be free.
What’s Good
Fast and polished output. API responses come back in under 100ms. Generated components look professional out of the box — clean TypeScript, proper prop interfaces, responsive design, modern styling with Tailwind CSS. For prototyping and building standard UI patterns (nav bars, cards, forms, hero sections, pricing tables), the quality is high enough to use with minimal modification.
Library-backed generation reduces hallucination. Because Magic pulls from a curated component library rather than generating from scratch, the output follows tested patterns. You get components that actually work, with proper accessibility attributes and responsive behavior. This is meaningfully more reliable than asking a general-purpose LLM to write a component from memory.
IDE integration is the right UX. The /ui command in your agent chat is more natural than switching to a browser tab (v0) or copy-pasting from a component site. The generated code drops directly into your project, following your existing code style and structure. It doesn’t modify other files — just creates the component you asked for.
SVGL for brand assets. Access to thousands of company logos and icons is a genuinely useful feature for building realistic UIs quickly. No more hunting for SVG files.
What’s Not
API key required with restrictive free tier. You can’t try Magic without signing up and generating an API key. The free tier’s generation limit is very low — one reviewer burned through it in minutes of experimentation. At $20/month, it’s a real cost for a tool that generates individual components. By comparison, v0 and most AI coding agents generate UI code without per-component billing.
No formal releases. Zero tagged releases on GitHub after 77 commits. The npm packages (@21st-dev/magic and @21st-dev/cli) haven’t been updated in ~10 months. This raises questions about active development — the GitHub repo shows recent issues being filed (April 2026), but the published packages appear stagnant.
Open prompt injection vulnerability. Issue #46 (March 25, 2026) details a supply chain attack vector: a malicious component in the 21st.dev library could embed prompt injection instructions in code comments or variable names. When fetched by Magic MCP, these instructions enter the LLM’s context and could direct the agent to introduce backdoors, exfiltrate credentials, or modify project files. Mapped to OWASP LLM01 and OWASP Agentic AG01/AG07. No maintainer response as of April 2026.
[object Object] errors in component builder. Issues #55 and #58 (April 2026) report the primary 21st_magic_component_builder tool returning [object Object] instead of actual component code. This suggests a serialization bug in the current version. Multiple users affected.
Limited scope — single components only. Magic generates individual UI components, not full pages, layouts, or multi-component dashboards. For anything beyond a single component, you’re making multiple requests and assembling the results yourself. Full-page generation tools like Bolt.new and v0 handle this better.
24 open issues, 6 open PRs, no visible triage. The Gemini API compatibility issue (#37) has been open since November 2025. The prompt injection advisory (#46) has no maintainer response after a month. The issue backlog suggests limited maintainer bandwidth despite YC backing.
Gemini incompatibility. Issue #37 reports that Magic’s tool names violate Gemini API function calling rules, making it incompatible with Gemini-based MCP clients. Unfixed since November 2025.

Magic MCP’s unique position is library-backed generation inside your IDE. v0 generates more ambitious outputs (full pages) but in a browser. shadcn/ui gives you the same component library but without AI generation. Bolt.new builds entire applications but can’t integrate into your existing project the way Magic does.
The question is whether IDE-native component generation from a curated library is worth $20/month when general-purpose AI agents (Claude, Cursor’s built-in AI) can generate React components for free using the same underlying models.
The Bigger Picture
21st Labs is positioning beyond component generation. As a YC W26 company, they’re building “infrastructure and UI building blocks for the agentic internet” — including a 21st Agents SDK for deploying agents with sandboxed execution, credential security, and pre-built chat UI. The Magic MCP server is the entry point to a broader agent platform.
This explains the freemium model and API key requirement — 21st.dev is building a business, not just an open-source tool. The curated component library is the moat: as more components are added and quality-controlled, the generated output should improve relative to uncurated AI generation.
But the current state raises concerns. The npm packages haven’t been updated in 10 months. The primary tool has serialization bugs. A prompt injection vulnerability sits unaddressed. The free tier is too restrictive for evaluation. For a YC-backed company, the pace of public development is surprisingly slow — the real development may be happening on the hosted platform rather than the open-source MCP server.
Worth watching: whether the npm packages get updated (they’re significantly behind the hosted service), whether the prompt injection advisory gets a response, and whether the 21st Agents SDK creates a more compelling reason to be in the 21st.dev ecosystem.
