Correction (2026-08-14 citation audit): the narrative sections below describe the server as of the May 2026 update (v9.0.0) — that was accurate at last full refresh, but the package has continued shipping since (now v12.5.7, ~46 tool files in the repo, up from 41+). The stats line above has been updated to current live values; the version-by-version “What’s New” history below has not been re-walked past v9.0.0. Two specific things we did verify this audit: the Goal MCP tools called “pending” below have since shipped (see the Goal tools note), and several issues listed as “still open” have since closed (see that section). A full refresh to the current release is still owed.
The Todoist MCP server is Doist’s official bridge between AI assistants and their task management platform. It’s part of a broader todoist-ai SDK — the tools aren’t just for MCP but can be imported directly into custom AI applications. The MCP server is one distribution surface for a reusable tool library.
The server provides 41+ tools covering the full task lifecycle: creating and finding tasks, managing projects and sections, commenting, handling assignments, tracking activity, managing filters, viewing attachments, analyzing productivity, and searching across your entire Todoist workspace. A hosted endpoint at ai.todoist.net/mcp means zero local installation for most users.

What’s New (May 2026 Update)
Development continues at the same breakneck pace — 9 more releases from v8.9.1 to v9.0.0 between April 20 and May 14, bringing the total to approximately 107–109 releases. The biggest news: the notorious add-sections bug is finally fixed, and the package has been renamed.
Breaking change:

Development remains relentless — 15 more releases from v8.4.1 to v8.9.0 between March 25 and April 14, bringing the total to 98 releases. The tool count has grown from 37+ to 40+, and two major gaps from our previous review have been closed.

- Reminder support added (v8.6.0). This was one of our top criticisms — “No reminders” is no longer true. Agents can now create and manage reminders on tasks, with

Authentication
OAuth 2.0 via browser-based authorization flow. The hosted server at ai.todoist.net/mcp handles the OAuth dance — you authenticate in your browser, and your MCP client stores tokens locally. No API keys stored on disk.
For local development or direct SDK usage, you can use a TODOIST_API_KEY environment variable with a personal API token (Settings > Integrations > Developer in Todoist).

What’s Good
The SDK-first architecture is forward-thinking. Most MCP servers are just MCP servers — tools built specifically for the MCP protocol. Todoist-ai inverts this: it’s a reusable tool library that happens to expose an MCP server as one interface. The same tools can be imported into Vercel AI SDK projects, custom agent pipelines, or any TypeScript application. This means the tools get tested and used across more surfaces, which tends to improve quality.
The development velocity is exceptional. 98 releases and counting as of the April 2026 update, with v7.4.0 to v8.9.0 shipping new tools, bug fixes, and infrastructure improvements at a pace that outstrips most official MCP servers (release history). Doist has a team actively responding to issues — a batch timeout bug affecting add-tasks was fixed in v8.0.1 (March 17, 2026) by parallelizing the tool’s execution. (Correction, 2026-08-14 audit: this previously also credited that same March 17 fix with “partial failure handling” — per the changelog, per-task failure reporting for batches wasn’t added until v12.2.1, July 31, 2026, months later. That detail has been moved to the correct date and removed from here.) Automated releases via release-please. The v8.8.3 addition of retry with exponential backoff for transient 5xx errors shows production-grade reliability thinking.
Transport flexibility covers every client. Streamable HTTP for hosted deployments and stdio for local development. (Correction, 2026-08-14 audit: this previously also credited SSE as a third supported transport — as already noted in the Authentication section above, SSE is no longer listed among the server’s advertised transports as of v9.0.0; that detail just hadn’t been fixed here too.) You’re not locked into one client ecosystem. Claude Desktop uses HTTP, Cursor uses mcp-remote, Claude Code uses HTTP directly, and you can run it locally for custom agent work — all with the same server.
MCP Apps bring interactive UI to chat. Instead of plain text task lists, Todoist can render interactive widgets directly in chat interfaces. This isn’t just cosmetic — interactive task lists, checkable items, and visual project overviews are genuinely more useful than text dumps. This is early (supported in limited clients), but it’s the direction MCP is heading.
The get-overview tool reduces round trips. One call gives agents a dashboard-style summary of your Todoist state — upcoming tasks, active projects, inbox items. Without this, an agent would need to call find-tasks, find-projects, and find-sections separately to understand context. Small optimization, meaningful token savings.
Delete operations exist. Unlike Linear’s MCP server (which has no delete or archive), Todoist includes delete-object for removing tasks, projects, and other entities. Full CRUD coverage is what you’d expect from a task manager, and Todoist delivers it.
Filter management is a power-user differentiator. Four dedicated tools for creating, searching, updating, and deleting filters. Todoist power users build their workflows around custom filters — “overdue & #Work,” “today & p1” — and now agents can manage these programmatically. No other task management MCP server we’ve reviewed exposes filter management.
What’s Not
The package rename is a breaking change. v9.0.0 (May 14) renamed the package from @doist/todoist-ai to @doist/todoist-mcp. Any existing setup referencing npx @doist/todoist-ai or @doist/todoist-ai in config files will break silently — the old package receives no further updates. This is the right long-term move (the new name is unambiguous), but it’s disruptive for existing users.
add-projects still doesn’t support folder placement. Issue #332 remains open as of this audit. While workspace support was added (v7.14.0) and folderId/childOrder now appear in project responses (v7.15.0), you still can’t place a new project directly into a specific folder at creation time. For users with deeply nested project hierarchies, this requires a create-then-move workflow.
Bulk task creation hits rate limits. Issue #481 (May 16): creating ~45+ tasks in a single add-tasks call returns HTTP 403 Forbidden from the Todoist API. The server-side rate limiting is aggressive enough to affect legitimate batch operations. No fix or workaround documented as of our last full refresh. Update (2026-08-14 audit): this issue is now closed on GitHub; the closing rationale wasn’t visible in the thread, so we can’t confirm whether the underlying limit was raised or just worked around.
OAuth wasn’t working for ChatGPT connections. Issue #478 (May 14): the OAuth flow returned invalid_client when connecting via ChatGPT because the client_id was returned as a URL instead of a client identifier. Update (2026-08-14 audit): this issue is now closed on GitHub; verify current ChatGPT OAuth behavior directly if this matters for your setup, since we couldn’t confirm the fix details.
Reauth friction in Claude Code. Issue #475 (May 11): the hosted MCP server frequently demanded reauthentication in Claude Code CLI even after Doist deployed a token-refresh mechanism. Update (2026-08-14 audit): this issue is now closed on GitHub.
Attachment creation is still missing. The view-attachment tool lets agents read task attachments, but add-comment with file attachments (PR #191) is still open and unmerged as of this audit. Full attachment lifecycle — view and add — is not yet complete.
Quick Add syntax gap. PR #2: a natural-language Quick Add tool (“Buy milk tomorrow p1 #Work”) was proposed but closed without merging after maintainers flagged parsing-ambiguity risk in an autonomous context. All task creation goes through structured parameters. Users who rely on Quick Add strings are not served by the current API.
Community & Alternatives
The Todoist MCP ecosystem is fragmented, with at least six community servers predating the official one:
- abhiz123/todoist-mcp-server — The most-starred community server (391 stars as of this audit). Node.js, stdio, natural language task management. Simpler but stable for basic CRUD.
- greirson/mcp-todoist (244 stars) — Connects Claude to Todoist with bulk operation support. Less relevant now that the official server fixed batch timeouts.
- stanislavlysenko0912/todoist-mcp-server (64 stars) — Full REST API v2 and Sync API implementation. In our assessment, the most complete community alternative in terms of API coverage.
- mikemc/todoist-mcp-server — Python implementation using the Todoist Python API.
- IAMSamuelRodda/todoist-mcp — FastMCP-based, Python. Archived by its owner on Feb 16, 2026; read-only, no longer maintained.

The gap between the official server and community alternatives has widened further. With 40+ tools including reminders, filter management, project health analytics, attachment viewing, reordering, and retry logic with exponential backoff, the official server now has substantially more tools (40+ vs. typically 8–15 for community servers) and better reliability. The community servers’ stability advantage — their main selling point previously — has evaporated as the official server fixed its critical bugs and added production-grade error handling.

vs. Linear: Linear has better tool design (flat parameters, embedded enums, “me” shortcuts) and is more stable. Todoist now has significantly more tools (40+ vs. 23+), more transport options, delete support, filter management, reminders, and MCP Apps. Linear is a project management platform; Todoist is a personal/team task manager. Different use cases, and Todoist’s MCP has narrowed the polish gap considerably.
vs. Notion: Notion covers knowledge management alongside tasks. Todoist is laser-focused on task management with the widest tool surface for that specific domain. Notion’s MCP is more stable but had its own growing pains (the v2.0.0 breaking rename). Both support local and hosted deployment.
vs. community Todoist servers: The official server now decisively wins on tool count (40+ vs. 8–15), authentication (OAuth vs API keys), transport flexibility, filter management, reminders, attachment viewing, reordering, productivity stats, and MCP Apps. The stability gap that previously favored community servers has closed. The official server is the clear choice for new integrations.
Who’s It For
The Todoist MCP server works best for individual users and small teams already on Todoist who want to manage tasks conversationally. “Add a task to submit the report by Friday #Work p1” through Claude is genuinely faster than opening the Todoist app.
For developers building AI agents that need task management, the SDK-first architecture is the real selling point. Import the tools directly into your Vercel AI SDK project or custom pipeline — you’re not locked into the MCP protocol.

Since our initial review, reminders, project health analytics, filter management, retry logic, and now update-labels have shipped — and the p1 add-sections bug that made Claude Web unusable for section creation has finally been fixed.
The development velocity tells the real story: ~109 releases and counting, 51% traffic growth in one month on PulseMCP, and the open issue backlog consistently resolved rather than growing stale. Every major gap we’ve flagged — assignments, batch timeouts, reminders, the section bug — has been addressed.
The May 2026 caveats were real at the time: the package rename (@doist/todoist-ai → @doist/todoist-mcp) broke existing setups silently, bulk task creation hit rate limits around 45+ tasks, and ChatGPT OAuth connectivity was broken as of mid-May. These are the kinds of rough edges that appear when a server is actively used at scale — not signs of neglect.
