Figma’s stock moved 7% in a single day. That is unusual for a design tool launch. It signals that the market read Claude Design not as a novelty product, but as a structural threat to the existing design platform stack.

To understand why, you have to understand what Claude Design is not. It is not a prompt-to-image generator that produces a screenshot you paste into a slide. It is not a static wireframe you hand to a designer for cleanup. Claude Design produces live HTML — clickable, testable, scrollable — and the output is aware of your specific design system because it read your codebase and your Figma files to find out what that system is.

That combination — native output, system-aware generation — is why the reaction was not dismissal.


The Timeline

The timing of the launch was not incidental.

April 14, 2026: Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger resigned from Figma’s board of directors. Krieger co-founded Instagram, joined Anthropic in 2023, and had held a board seat at Figma — a company he had a long personal relationship with — since before that acquisition attempt.

April 17, 2026: Claude Design launched.

The three-day gap drew immediate commentary. Krieger’s Figma board departure was widely interpreted as advance clearance for a competitive product. Anthropic confirmed the connection without elaborating. The implicit message: this is not a feature. It is a product category.


What Claude Design Actually Does

Claude Design lives inside Claude.ai as a new tab alongside Chat and Projects.

The workflow starts with a prompt. You describe the artifact you want: a landing page for a SaaS product, a pitch deck for an investor meeting, a marketing one-pager for a product launch, a mobile app screen. The description can be high-level (“a pricing page for a B2B tool”) or specific (“a checkout flow with three steps: cart, payment, confirmation, using our green/white brand palette”).

Claude generates a first version. The output is live HTML — rendered in a browser-style preview pane, not a static mockup. You can scroll it, click buttons, navigate between states.

From there, refinement works through several channels:

  • Chat conversation: describe what you want changed (“make the CTA more prominent”, “add a testimonials section”)
  • Inline element comments: click directly on a component and annotate it
  • Direct text editing: click into copy and change it without going through the model
  • Adjustment sliders: Claude generates custom sliders for the design — spacing, type size, color weight — that you can drag without prompting

The sliders are the most distinctive interaction pattern. Rather than presenting generic controls, the model reads what it generated and surfaces the knobs that are actually meaningful for this specific layout. A hero section gets a headline-weight slider. A card grid gets a density control.


The Design System Feature

The central differentiator is the design system awareness.

During onboarding, Claude Design asks for access to your codebase and your Figma files. It scans both to extract:

  • Color tokens and their semantic names
  • Typography scales and font pairings
  • Component library structure
  • Spacing and grid systems
  • Brand voice (from copy patterns in existing pages)

Every subsequent generation uses that system. If your brand uses Inter at 16px/24px with a slate color palette and rounded cards at 8px radius, Claude Design applies those specifics rather than its own defaults.

This is qualitatively different from Figma Make’s approach. Figma’s AI generation tool draws from its 372-component “Simple Design System” — a shared library that every Figma Make user gets. It is polished and consistent, but it is generic. Claude Design generates from your components.

The practical implication: Claude Design outputs that are closer to production-ready for teams with established design systems, and significantly further from it for teams without one.


Export Options

When you are done, exports are:

  • HTML — the live rendered output, self-contained
  • PDF — static export for decks and documents
  • PPTX — for teams living in PowerPoint
  • Canva — editable import into Canva’s design environment
  • Internal URL — a shareable link hosted inside Claude.ai for review and comment

The HTML export is the most interesting. A generated landing page can be exported as a working HTML file that a developer can take directly into a codebase. It is not clean production code — you would refactor before shipping — but it compresses the gap between “design” and “implementation” to a degree that previous tools could not.


Availability and Pricing

Claude Design is available inside Claude.ai.

  • Free tier: access to Design with usage limits
  • Claude Pro ($20/month): full access, longer conversations, higher usage
  • Max, Team, Enterprise: included with those subscriptions

No standalone pricing for Claude Design. It is bundled into the Claude.ai subscription tiers.

The Pro tier has always been positioned as Claude’s primary consumer/professional offering. Claude Design is the most significant feature addition to that tier since Projects.


Competitors

The two main comparisons are Figma Make and Canva’s AI generation tools.

Figma Make: Figma’s AI prototype generator uses a shared component library and generates wireframes and interactive prototypes from prompts. Its strength is tight integration with the rest of the Figma ecosystem — generated outputs live in Figma files and can be handed directly to designers for refinement. Its limitation is that the design system is shared across all users, not yours.

Canva: Canva has invested heavily in AI design generation across its product. The workflow is closer to Claude Design’s — describe what you want, iterate — but outputs are canvas-based rather than HTML, and the design system awareness is weaker. Canva’s advantage is its enormous template library and strong brand among non-designers.

Where Claude Design wins: design system fidelity for existing codebases; live HTML output; refinement via natural language; no prior design tool knowledge required.

Where Figma still wins: production-ready handoff for professional design teams; mature component ecosystem; collaboration features; version history; developer mode.


The Critical Limitation

There is one workflow constraint that needs to be understood before committing to Claude Design for any serious project.

Once you make a manual text edit to the generated output, you can no longer use chat-based prompt refinement to modify that element.

This is not a minor caveat. It means the workflow has a hard fork: at some point, you switch from AI-driven iteration to manual editing and stay there. You cannot go back. Prompt-based refinement and manual editing do not coexist.

For quick prototyping and stakeholder reviews, this is tolerable. The AI gets you to 80%, manual edits close the last 20%. But if you expect to iterate by prompting after making even a small manual change, you will hit this constraint early and it will be frustrating.

This appears to be a technical limitation of how Claude Design tracks its own output state, not a deliberate design choice. The expectation is that it will improve.


Who It Is For

Product managers and founders who need credible prototypes for pitches, user research, and stakeholder reviews but do not want to learn Figma or hire a designer for every iteration. Claude Design delivers a functional prototype in minutes.

Engineers building design-system-aware UI who can benefit from a generation tool that reads their actual component library. The output is closer to what they would write anyway.

Marketing and content teams producing one-pagers, landing pages, and slide decks inside a tool they already use for writing.

Professional designers: less clear. For production work, Figma’s handoff workflow, plugin ecosystem, and version control remain ahead. Claude Design is more a complement — fast first-draft generation — than a replacement.

Claude Design lands at 4 out of 5.

The design system feature is the real thing. A tool that reads your codebase to learn your brand, then generates live HTML prototypes in that brand’s language, is a meaningfully new category. The multimodal refinement (chat + inline comments + generated sliders) is well-designed. The HTML export compresses the design-to-implementation gap.

The manual-edit / prompt-incompatibility limitation holds it back from 5. That workflow constraint makes Claude Design a strong prototyping tool rather than a full design system. For teams in the early stages of a project or without established design systems, the value is already high.

Figma’s 7% drop on launch day reflected real concern. That concern is warranted.
