There is an assumption built into most AI coding tools: a human is watching.
The session starts, the developer types a request, the model generates code, the developer reviews it, approves or corrects, and the loop continues. The AI is fast and capable, but fundamentally reactive. It waits. It responds. It asks before acting.
Claude Code has operated this way since launch. And for most tasks, that model is correct. You want a human checking whether the agent is about to rewrite the wrong file.
But “a human is watching” also creates a ceiling. It means Claude Code stops when you stop. It means sessions stall when you look away. It means recurring tasks — the same triage pass run every morning, the same SDK kept in sync across languages, the same deployment checked after every merge — have to be re-initiated manually, every time.
Anthropic’s answer is two features shipped in quick succession in early 2026: Auto Mode, which reduces how often you need to be watching, and Routines, which removes the requirement that you be there at all.
The Approval Fatigue Problem
Before explaining either feature, it helps to understand the problem Anthropic measured.
Claude Code users approve 93% of permission prompts. That number is telling: almost every time Claude asks for approval, the developer says yes. The friction is real — each approval interrupts focus — but the signal content is minimal. Most prompts are not judgment calls; they are formalities that happen to require a click.
The remaining 7% matter. Those are the cases where a developer actually pauses, reads carefully, and makes a real decision. The approval system exists for them.
Auto Mode is an attempt to distinguish between the 93% and the 7% automatically.
Auto Mode: A Classifier Inside the Coding Agent
Auto Mode launched March 24, 2026 as a research preview for Claude Code Team plan users. It is compatible with Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6.
The architecture is a two-stage classifier that evaluates each Claude Code action before execution:
- Fast filter: A single-token classification checks whether the action is obviously safe. If yes, it proceeds without prompting. This path adds minimal latency.
- Chain-of-thought review: If the fast filter flags uncertainty, a second-stage model reasons through the action in more depth before deciding whether to execute or escalate to the developer.
Actions that involve sensitive operations — credentials, critical infrastructure, production deployments — continue to surface for human approval regardless of the classifier’s output. The goal is not to eliminate human oversight but to route it to where it actually adds value.
Anthropic is transparent about the limitations. The classifier is itself an AI system, which means it can make mistakes in both directions: blocking harmless operations (false positive) or failing to catch a subtle risk (false negative). The recommendation is to use Auto Mode inside isolated environments, not pointed at production systems.
For interactive sessions, Auto Mode reduces interruptions without changing what Claude Code can do. It does not grant new permissions — it automates the approval of permissions that were already being granted.
Routines: Claude Code as Background Infrastructure
Routines go further. They answer a different question: what if Claude Code did not need you there at all?
A Routine is a saved configuration: a prompt, one or more repositories, and a set of connectors, packaged once and stored. Once configured, the routine executes on Anthropic-managed cloud infrastructure — not your laptop, not your own servers. Close your machine and the routine continues running.
Three Trigger Types
Each routine can be activated three ways:
Scheduled — runs on a recurring cadence you define: hourly, nightly, weekly, or at a specific time. Useful for maintenance tasks that have a natural rhythm.
API — fires when an HTTP POST hits a per-routine endpoint with a bearer token. Useful for integrating Routines into existing pipelines, dashboards, or on-call workflows.
GitHub — responds to repository events such as pull requests opened, closed, or updated; new releases; or CI status changes. Claude Code can monitor the lifecycle of a pull request, respond to comments, track CI failures, and keep working across the full duration of the change.
What Teams Are Using It For
Anthropic has shared a set of workflows that teams are already running through Routines:
- Cross-language SDK synchronization: A merged Python SDK pull request automatically triggers a Routine that ports the changes to a Go SDK and opens a corresponding pull request. No human bridges the two repos.
- Nightly issue triage: Claude reviews newly filed issues each night, categorizes them, tags them, assigns severity, and drafts initial responses. Engineers start the day with triage already done.
- Documentation drift detection: A scheduled Routine scans for mismatches between code and documentation, flags gaps, and optionally opens issues or pull requests.
- Deployment verification: After a merge to main, a Routine checks that the deployed environment matches the expected state and surfaces anomalies.
- Alert analysis: A paging event triggers a Routine that gathers context — recent commits, affected services, error logs — and prepares a summary before the on-call engineer opens their phone.
The pattern across all of these is the same: recurring work that is too repetitive for a senior engineer to do well, too nuanced for a simple script, and too important to skip.
The Relationship to Managed Agents
Routines and Claude Managed Agents solve adjacent problems, and it is worth being clear about where they differ.
Claude Managed Agents (reviewed separately) is a production agent runtime: sandboxed execution, long-running sessions, credential management, full audit tracing. It is infrastructure for building agent-powered applications — products where Claude is the engine.
Claude Code Routines is automation for development workflows — the CI/CD pipeline, the issue queue, the SDK maintenance burden. It runs inside the development process rather than shipping as part of a product.
In practice, a team might use both: Managed Agents to power the AI features inside their application, Routines to maintain the codebase itself.
Pricing and Availability
Both features are in research preview as of May 2026, available to Claude Code Team plan subscribers. Research preview means access is not automatic — developers need to enable it, and the features may change before general availability.
Anthropic has not published per-execution pricing for Routines specifically. Costs derive from standard Claude API token consumption for each run. A nightly triage routine scanning 50 issues likely runs in the low single digits of dollars; a complex cross-repository sync could be more.
The Batch API’s 50% discount does not apply to Managed Agent sessions. Whether that applies to Routine-triggered sessions is not currently documented — something developers should verify before running high-volume workloads.
What This Signals
Two things are worth noting about what Anthropic is building here.
First, the infrastructure dependency is real. Routines run on Anthropic-managed cloud infrastructure. That means your automation depends on Anthropic’s availability and on Anthropic’s continued support for the feature. For teams that have bad memories of platforms deprecating automation tools, that is a genuine risk to factor in. The upside — no servers to maintain, no cron infrastructure to monitor — comes with that tradeoff.
Second, this is a different theory of what AI coding tools are for. Most AI coding tools are designed around the interactive session: the model helps you move faster while you are working. Routines treats Claude Code as something closer to an engineer on your team — one that does the maintenance tasks that everyone agrees are important but no one wants to own.
Whether that framing holds up in production will depend on how reliably the classifier catches edge cases and how predictable Claude’s judgment is across the long tail of real codebases. Both are empirical questions that the research preview is designed to answer.
The research preview period is where Anthropic learns what it got wrong. Developers who participate in that window get early access to capabilities that could meaningfully reduce maintenance burden — and they also sign up to discover the edge cases first.

Strengths: Routines address a genuine gap — recurring developer tasks that sit between “too simple for senior engineers” and “too nuanced for dumb scripts.” The three trigger types (schedule, API, GitHub events) cover most real-world automation needs. The underlying model quality in Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 is strong. The cross-repository SDK sync use case alone justifies the feature for polyglot teams.
Weaknesses: Research preview status means both features are works in progress. Infrastructure dependency on Anthropic is a real concentration risk. Pricing transparency for Routines is incomplete. Auto Mode’s classifier is itself a probabilistic system — it will miss some edge cases.
Bottom line: If your team’s maintenance queue has tasks that are too important to skip and too tedious to do well, Routines is worth evaluating. Auto Mode is a quality-of-life improvement for long interactive sessions. Together they shift Claude Code’s positioning from interactive assistant to always-on development infrastructure — and that shift matters more than either feature in isolation.
