Google DeepMind launched Lyria 3 Pro on March 25, 2026 — a music generation model capable of producing full 3-minute tracks with bar-level structural control, 48kHz audio output, and training data sourced entirely from licensed and permissible content. The model arrived one day before Suno released v5.5, making the last week of March a compressed inflection point for AI music generation.
This review covers what Lyria 3 Pro actually does, who can access it and how, what it costs, how it stacks up against its direct competitors, and what the “licensed data” angle means in practice for enterprise and developer use cases.
Background: The Lyria Family
Lyria is Google DeepMind’s music generation model line. Before Lyria 3 Pro, the progression was:
- Lyria 1 & 2 (2024): API-only models, used internally in YouTube Music experiments and limited developer previews
- Lyria 3 (February 18, 2026): Launched in the Gemini app for all users 18+ in eight languages. Text-to-music, image-to-music, 30-second tracks, custom cover art generated alongside each clip
- Lyria 3 Pro (March 25, 2026): Extended duration (up to 3 minutes), structured composition (verse/chorus/bridge), developer-first availability via Vertex AI and Gemini API, enterprise deployment
Lyria 3 is consumer-facing. Lyria 3 Pro is built for developers and enterprises who need longer, more controllable output suitable for integration into products.
What Lyria 3 Pro Does
Track Length
The most immediate upgrade over Lyria 3: tracks up to three minutes. That’s enough for a complete song with intro, verses, chorus, bridge, and outro. The 30-second limit of the base model was useful for background clips and short-form video; it was a hard ceiling for anything resembling a complete musical composition.
Three minutes is still shorter than Suno v5.5’s four-minute base generation (extendable to 8–12+ minutes on higher plans), but it covers the vast majority of standard song structures and commercial music use cases.
Structural Control
This is Lyria 3 Pro’s defining technical differentiator. The model understands musical architecture at the bar level. A prompt like:
“intro 8 bars, verse 16 bars, chorus 8 bars, verse 16 bars, chorus 8 bars, outro 4 bars”
produces a track that follows that structure. Genre, tempo, key, and instrumentation can all be specified in the same prompt. The model was built to parse these specifications rather than approximate them through statistical pattern matching.
Suno and Udio accept structural instructions but do not guarantee adherence. Lyria 3 Pro’s structural fidelity is noticeably more reliable for production use cases where you need predictable output for a video or game timeline.
Audio Fidelity
Lyria 3 Pro generates at 48kHz — the standard for professional audio, above the 44.1kHz CD standard. In listening comparisons, the model produces instrumental tracks with perceptible physical realism: piano attacks decay naturally, string resonance lingers at the expected rate, and percussion transients have edge without harshness.
The caveat: this fidelity advantage applies primarily to instrumental music. Vocal generation is where Lyria 3 Pro falls behind Suno. Suno v5.5’s vocal quality — melodic choices, timbre, diction — remains more compelling. Lyria 3 Pro generates acceptable vocals but not benchmark ones.
SynthID Watermarking
All tracks generated with Lyria 3 or Lyria 3 Pro are embedded with SynthID, Google DeepMind’s imperceptible audio watermarking system. The watermark survives compression, encoding conversion, and basic audio editing. It is not a visible tag — it is embedded in the audio signal itself.
SynthID is not DRM and does not restrict what you can do with the file. It is a provenance marker: if a track is later inspected by a SynthID-aware tool, its AI origin can be detected. This is increasingly relevant as content platforms and regulators build provenance-checking infrastructure.
The Legal Position
This is the story underneath the model announcement. Suno and Udio are both defendants in active RIAA lawsuits filed in mid-2024. As of May 2026, neither case is resolved, both companies have significant legal liability in unresolved discovery, and neither has published detailed training data attribution.
Google’s stated position on Lyria 3 Pro training data:
“We used data from our partners and permissible data from YouTube and Google.”
The model is explicitly designed to not mimic specific artists. Google does acknowledge that if you specify an artist in a prompt — “in the style of [artist]” — the model takes “broad inspiration” from that artist’s style. But it does not replicate their voice, and it does not generate outputs that reproduce copyrighted compositions.
For enterprise customers and developers deploying AI-generated music at scale, this legal posture matters. A company building a music licensing platform or embedded background music for an app cannot absorb open-ended litigation risk. Lyria 3 Pro’s clean training data is not just a PR positioning choice — it is a product feature for commercial deployment.

Suno v5.5 is the overall winner for most creators: stronger vocals, longer tracks, cheaper at volume, and more flexible for DAW integration via stem export. Udio’s natural language remix mode is well-liked for rapid creative iteration.
Lyria 3 Pro’s competitive edge is narrower but real: structural fidelity, audio cleanliness, API quality, and legal defensibility. It is the choice for enterprise deployments, regulated industries, and developers building products where music generation is a feature rather than an end in itself.
What It’s Good For
Strong use cases:
- Background music for video, app, and game projects where production-quality fidelity matters
- Enterprise products requiring legally defensible AI-generated audio
- Developers integrating music generation via API into Workspace, Vids, or custom pipelines
- Structured compositions where you need exact verse/chorus timing for video sync

Lyria 3 Pro is a well-engineered model with a genuine differentiator: structural control that works, audio fidelity that stands up to professional scrutiny, and a legal position that makes commercial deployment viable. It is not the best AI music tool for most individual creators — Suno v5.5 still wins that competition on vocal quality, track length, and price at volume.
But “best for most creators” is not the only market. For developers, enterprises, and teams inside the Google ecosystem who need reliable, legally clean, API-accessible music generation, Lyria 3 Pro is the current answer. The 48kHz output and bar-level structural prompting are not features other vendors have matched.
The three-minute cap is the main technical frustration. Lyria 3 Pro’s structural fidelity advantage would compound with longer tracks. That is presumably coming.
