The Headline

One month into operation, Project Glasswing — Anthropic’s controlled-access cybersecurity initiative using Claude Mythos Preview — has found more vulnerabilities than most organizations discover in a decade.

Anthropic published its initial update on May 22, 2026. The numbers are staggering:

  • 23,019 total vulnerabilities identified across 1,000+ open-source projects
  • 6,202 estimated as high or critical severity
  • 1,587 confirmed true positives out of 1,752 independently reviewed (90.6% true positive rate)
  • 1,094 confirmed high or critical severity among those reviewed
  • 530 high/critical bugs disclosed to maintainers so far
  • 75 patched as of May 22
  • 827 confirmed vulnerabilities held back — waiting for maintainers to catch up

That last line is the one that changes how you should think about AI-powered vulnerability research. The bottleneck has inverted.

As Anthropic put it in the update: “Progress on software security used to be limited by how quickly we could find new vulnerabilities. Now it’s limited by how quickly we can verify, disclose, and patch."


Partner-by-Partner Results

The update includes specific figures from named Glasswing partners. These are the organizations that volunteered their own codebases for Mythos Preview analysis:

Cloudflare: ~2,000 vulnerabilities found across their infrastructure; 400 classified as high or critical severity. Cloudflare specifically noted the model’s ability to construct end-to-end attack chains, with lower false-positive rates than human-led penetration testing.

Mozilla / Firefox 150: 271 vulnerabilities found and fixed, substantially more than earlier testing runs with Claude Opus 4.6. Mozilla credits Glasswing participation with accelerating their Firefox 150 security patch cycle.

Palo Alto Networks: Their most recent product release included more than 5x the normal number of security patches. This is a company with a full-time security research team; the jump in patch volume signals how much Mythos Preview is finding that prior methods missed.

Oracle: Finding and fixing vulnerabilities “multiple times faster” than before. Oracle has shifted from a quarterly patch release cadence to monthly.

Microsoft: Internal teams described monthly patch volume as likely to “continue trending larger for some time.”

Cisco: Opened its Foundry Security Spec to the broader community as part of the initiative.

IBM (joined May 19, 2026): IBM’s X-Force researchers are embedded in Glasswing workflows. IBM SVP Rob Thomas stated: “AI-powered attacks have already moved beyond what traditional defenses can match." IBM joins as the most prominently new named partner since the April 7 launch.

One additional finding doesn’t fit neatly into software vulnerability categories: an unnamed partner bank reported that a Glasswing deployment detected a $1.5 million fraudulent wire transfer in progress. The initiative’s scope is wider than code.


The wolfSSL Finding: CVE-2026-5194

The standout individual discovery in the update is CVE-2026-5194, a critical flaw in wolfSSL — the cryptography library that runs on an estimated 5 billion devices globally, including embedded systems, IoT hardware, industrial control systems, routers, and aerospace/military equipment.

The discoverer was Nicholas Carlini, an Anthropic researcher working with Mythos Preview.

What it is: Missing hash/digest size and OID checks in ECDSA signature verification. Affected algorithms include ECDSA/ECC, DSA, ML-DSA (the post-quantum standard), Ed25519, and Ed448. Any build with both ECC and EdDSA or ML-DSA active is vulnerable.

What it enables: An attacker can supply forged certificates with smaller-than-appropriate digests, causing affected systems to accept a malicious server’s identity as legitimate. In practical terms: a forged certificate for a fake banking or email provider website that millions of devices would accept as genuine. CVSS score: 9.1–9.3, depending on the scoring framework.

Status: Fixed in wolfSSL 5.9.1, released April 8, 2026 — before the Glasswing update was published. The fix was coordinated before disclosure.

Carlini’s wolfSSL discovery was part of a broader cluster. VulnCheck’s tracking blog attributes nine wolfSSL CVEs to Anthropic researchers: CVE-2026-5194 (Carlini directly) and CVEs 5446, 5503, 5447, 5466, 5477, 5479, 5500, and 5501 via a collaboration with security research firm Calif.io.

Additional confirmed CVEs from the broader Glasswing effort: 15+ Firefox CVEs (multiple at CVSS 9.8), the previously known CVE-2026-4747 (17-year-old FreeBSD NFS root RCE, CVSS 8.8), plus individual CVEs in OpenSSL, F5 NGINX Plus, and Bouncy Castle. VulnCheck’s total count: 75 CVEs mentioning Anthropic, 40 attributed directly to Anthropic researchers.


The Patching Crisis

The most operationally significant part of the update isn’t the vulnerabilities found — it’s the ones waiting to be disclosed.

Of the 1,094 confirmed high/critical bugs reviewed:

  • 530 have been disclosed to maintainers
  • 75 have been patched
  • 827 additional confirmed vulnerabilities are being held back pending maintainer capacity

Average time to patch once disclosed: 2 weeks. That sounds reasonable. But when you’re disclosing vulnerabilities hundreds at a time, two weeks per bug becomes a multi-year backlog.

The more alarming signal: several unnamed open-source maintainers have explicitly asked Anthropic to slow down the pace of disclosures. They need time to design patches — and some maintainers are volunteers working on nights and weekends, not full-time security engineers.

This is the structural problem Project Glasswing has surfaced. The open-source security ecosystem was not built for AI-scale coordinated disclosure. The Linux Foundation, OpenSSF, and other foundation-backed organizations are beginning to grapple with it — but the infrastructure doesn’t exist yet.

Anthropic’s response: a $2.5 million commitment to the OpenSSF Alpha-Omega project to fund maintainer capacity building. It’s a start. At 6,200 high/critical bugs projected across open-source projects at current rates, it may not be enough.


What This Means for the Path to Public Release

The original Claude Mythos Preview announcement (April 7, 2026) framed restricted deployment as a safety measure: deploying under controlled conditions allows the vulnerabilities to be patched before the same capability becomes widely available.

The first-month results update reveals how that tradeoff is playing out in practice — and it’s more complicated than the announcement suggested.

On one hand, the patching effort is working. wolfSSL 5.9.1 fixed CVE-2026-5194 before disclosure; Firefox 150 integrated 271 fixes; Oracle and Palo Alto are shipping patches faster than ever. Defenders are using the preparation window Anthropic intended.

On the other hand, the patching backlog is growing faster than the patching rate. 827 confirmed high/critical bugs are sitting in a queue. For each of those, Anthropic and its security partners have a responsibility to disclose eventually — but the current ecosystem can’t absorb the volume without more resources.

The update also notes that Anthropic plans to expand Glasswing to include “critical partners” including U.S. and allied governments. That expansion suggests Glasswing is evolving from a software security initiative into something closer to national critical infrastructure defense — a shift with significant implications for how and when Mythos Preview might eventually see broader access.

For now, Mythos Preview remains restricted to approximately 50 organizations: the original 12 launch partners (Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, Apple, Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, JPMorganChase, Linux Foundation, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Palo Alto Networks) plus the expanded coalition including IBM and others.


Connecting the Dots

This update makes three things clear:

1. The capability floor has shifted. Mythos Preview found 23,000 vulnerabilities in 30 days with a 90.6% true positive rate. Independent evaluator XBOW described it as “absolutely unprecedented precision” on exploit reproduction. Every security team should now assume that any sufficiently motivated attacker with comparable access to AI capability can find vulnerabilities at this scale. The question is whether the defenders can patch faster than that attacker can exploit.

2. Disclosure ethics need to evolve. The current responsible disclosure framework was built for individual researchers finding individual bugs. It doesn’t have a procedure for an AI system finding thousands of bugs simultaneously across dozens of codebases. The maintainer requests to slow down are not a failure — they’re a signal that the framework needs to change, and that funding for security maintainers is now an AI safety issue, not just an open-source sustainability issue.

3. The value of the bottleneck insight. The most important sentence in the May 22 update may be the simplest one. “Progress on software security used to be limited by how quickly we could find new vulnerabilities. Now it’s limited by how quickly we can verify, disclose, and patch.” When Anthropic says the bottleneck has inverted, they’re describing a world in which AI capability has already outrun the infrastructure we have to respond to what it finds. Project Glasswing is one of the few concrete, public demonstrations of what that world looks like.
